Hi all!
Just wanted to share some of my results after experimenting with different .177 slugs for some time.
Local restrictions here requires you to get a license for any air gun in .22 caliber and up. There are no restrictions in power for .177 (and the bigger calibers as long as you obtain the license). By the end of last years summer I began researching powerful .177 guns capable of shooting the heavier .177 ammunition available. Long story short; some rainy day in October the postman brought me a long and heavy package from the NL.
The gun is a Beumont Grizzly Carbine capable of 50+ fps in .177. It is un-regulated and has a chocked LW barrel.
I have tried all the NSA .177 slugs, Mr. Hollowpoint 29gr, H&N Piledrivers and JSB Monsters. Here are the slugs compared with a JSB Exact 8.44gr.
In my initial testing I found NSA 18gr and 21gr to be most accurate and during this winter I have enjoyed shooting the gun with NSA 21gr at spinners and reactive targets on my improvised ranges. Weather can be rough on the coast of western Norway during the winter months, but on calm days like this I could easily hit a 2" target at 115meters.
This winter holiday we're spending at my in-laws and since I'm not much of a skier I brought my Beaumont. Yesterday I woke up to calm, beautiful weather. Below all that fog lays the winter olympic city of 1994 - Lillehammer.
I decided to rig up and do some proper accuracy testing. I quickly realized how difficult it were to single load .177 slugs and shoot tight groups in temperatures at around 23*F / -5*C. Shot this 7 shot group at 70 meters with lubed NSA 21gr and called it a day.
Today I woke up to no sunshine but a little warmer weather. Set the targets at 50 meters this time and started out with NSA 15,5gr (each group is 10 shots):
Then 18gr:
I suspected the two fliers to be me and not the gun, therefore I rigged up for another 10 shot group and could not belive my eyes when I walked up to the target:
WOW! Beaumont told me to lube my slugs for best results and thus far I have lubed all my slugs and pellets. This group is shot with un-lubed slugs. I had to take another 10 shot group with the lubed 21gr slugs I had with me.
Lubed 21gr on the left, un-lubed 18gr on the right.
Now I can barely wait for the holiday to be over so I can test out the some un-lubed 18gr at my 115m range at home!
Thanks for reading!
Erik
