Winter holidays: testing some slugs.

Hi all!

Just wanted to share some of my results after experimenting with different .177 slugs for some time.

Local restrictions here requires you to get a license for any air gun in .22 caliber and up. There are no restrictions in power for .177 (and the bigger calibers as long as you obtain the license). By the end of last years summer I began researching powerful .177 guns capable of shooting the heavier .177 ammunition available. Long story short; some rainy day in October the postman brought me a long and heavy package from the NL.

The gun is a Beumont Grizzly Carbine capable of 50+ fps in .177. It is un-regulated and has a chocked LW barrel.

I have tried all the NSA .177 slugs, Mr. Hollowpoint 29gr, H&N Piledrivers and JSB Monsters. Here are the slugs compared with a JSB Exact 8.44gr.

In my initial testing I found NSA 18gr and 21gr to be most accurate and during this winter I have enjoyed shooting the gun with NSA 21gr at spinners and reactive targets on my improvised ranges. Weather can be rough on the coast of western Norway during the winter months, but on calm days like this I could easily hit a 2" target at 115meters.

This winter holiday we're spending at my in-laws and since I'm not much of a skier I brought my Beaumont. Yesterday I woke up to calm, beautiful weather. Below all that fog lays the winter olympic city of 1994 - Lillehammer.

I decided to rig up and do some proper accuracy testing. I quickly realized how difficult it were to single load .177 slugs and shoot tight groups in temperatures at around 23*F / -5*C. Shot this 7 shot group at 70 meters with lubed NSA 21gr and called it a day.

Today I woke up to no sunshine but a little warmer weather. Set the targets at 50 meters this time and started out with NSA 15,5gr (each group is 10 shots):

Then 18gr:

I suspected the two fliers to be me and not the gun, therefore I rigged up for another 10 shot group and could not belive my eyes when I walked up to the target:

WOW! Beaumont told me to lube my slugs for best results and thus far I have lubed all my slugs and pellets. This group is shot with un-lubed slugs. I had to take another 10 shot group with the lubed 21gr slugs I had with me.

Lubed 21gr on the left, un-lubed 18gr on the right.

Now I can barely wait for the holiday to be over so I can test out the some un-lubed 18gr at my 115m range at home!

Thanks for reading!

VERY nice, Erik!!! That last 10 shot group is incredible. I can't help but notice the resemblance of that terrain with the Puget Sound here in Washington state, definitely colder there - but I commend you for braving the temperatures 👏

This rifle is the front runner for my next PCP, probably in .22 (although not many can say they have 50FPE in .177, just .. WOW!) 😎

Great post. A few questions/observations.

I personally would get the longest barrel I could for a .177, and either go non choked polygonal, make sure Beaumont hand laps the 0.004" choke of the LW down quite a bit for slugs, or buy all sized slugs & or size them myself.

You seem to be in the experimenting stage. I'd love to see what she can do once all is optimized, shooting tethered off a rest. Really amazing. Congrats!

whoww nice!

what lube did you use? Accurate Exact Lube? jajaja joking aside what lube?

70fpe on a 0.17!? impresive

Napier Power Pellet lube.

Gun is set to shoot at 960 fps with 21gr right now, 43 fpe. Can get more out of it but even at this level anything below 16gr goes supersonic.

Very nice. How much was the rifle?

I hate to think about just that. My wife were not happy when I told her. Add the March scope, Spuhr mount and all the other bells and whistles and I could buy a second (used) car.

Thanks! I feel very blessed to live just here.

Beaumont is something special! Build quality unlike any other PCP I have ever laid my hands upon, 6 year warranty, accurate, powerful and world class customer service - they basically build what you want.

Very cool looking rifle and groups , Have you come across Roe / THLR.NO ?

Yes! Been a follower of the vlog for years and have several of his products. Never met him personally.

Yes, I'm most certainly still in the experimenting stage! Feels like the more I shoot the less i know, hehe. Main focus since I got it has just been shooting it for fun and giggles. I'm very happy with the results I got with the 18gr NSA, unsized and right out of the bag. That said I have an adjustable external regulator for my tank ready and have been thinking about getting a longer, non chocked barrel for it.

I haven’t heard anyone talk about shooting slugs in a 177 or for that matter a 177 shooting at those power levels.

I think everyone will be very interested in seeing what you can do at 115 meters.

Have at it and report back

Will do! I'm going to stretch it further than 115m too, hoping to get out to 200+ meter this summer.
