I was out today at the SoCal Fun Shoot that Derrick @eyeshot.25 arranged. I brought two fairly new (to me) guns that I wanted to test.
First, a .25 EDgun Super Magnum, tuned by Derrick @zx10wall. I had bought the NSA 29 and 33.5 grain slugs to test as I intend this to be my slug gun. I tried both with mediocre results at 50 yards. Then Nick Nielsen suggested I try the 29.5 and the 36.2 grain slugs. I tried both with no luck. FYI, the 29 grain were about 1000 FPS and the 33.5 at about 940 FPS. So as I was about to put the gun in the case, Nick says he brought some 26.8 HP DB and maybe they’ll work better? So I shot 3 and they all went through the same hole at 50 yards. Then I shot a few more and they resulted in a very slight cloverleaf. Nick asked if they worked? Hells Yeah!!!! And over my FX Radar they were flying at 1040 FPS. So I shot some more at a 75 yard target and they remained stable and grouped just over 1/2 inch... looks like I found my slug!!!
Second, a .30 Vulcan2 Tactic. I never intended to shoot slugs with this gun that was shooting the 44.75 grain pellets at 865 FPS. But Nick said he brought some .30 slugs and would I like to try. Why not? So the first one he gives me is the brand new 47.2 grain HP DB. At 50 yards they were just as accurate as the 44.75 grain pellets, with the same POI. What? Hmmm, one more group, same results. Then I tried 4 other types of .30 slugs but Spock was having none of that. He liked his first slug best by far. These are going to be deadly on the ground squirrel population!
Overall a really fun time. I’ll tell you Nicks slugs off his new high speed machines are PERFECT! Nuff said, drops the mic. Thanks for bringing a boat load of slugs with you. We all tried out various slugs in our guns, and luckily I found an awesome slug for those two guns. The price is comparable to pellets, and the BCs are at least twice that of pellets. If you’re trying slugs, remember that you might have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your match.
Thanks Nick!!!
