I had to post this. I picked up a used wolverine R high power in 22. It was a two owner gun in as many months. But the price was good. Plus I’ve been hearing about these hopped up hot rod PCPs that shoot pellets really fast and really accurately. This one had a wonderful shot string from the second owner plus or minus about 7 ft./s, right at 895 with the 25 grain redesigns. The problem is they shot OK, not great.
So just for fun I tried some old silver tin 18g jsbs. They were literally piling on top of each other. 1010 fps! I shot a five shot magic group which I’ve pictured 1/2 MOA. The shooting weather was phenomenal. 74° a few clouds and sunny. Light breeze and switches a little bit from side to side to make things interesting.
I’ve been thinking about what would be a good group for 25 shots at 100 yards. A half inch group with five shots is extremely difficult. Same thing for ten into 1 inch, very tough. So I figured a 2 inch group with 25 shots would be doing very well indeed!
candidly, I blew that away with my first group today (I’ve been practicing for a week, a couple groups from this weekend are included).
I was constantly switching my hold from right to left edge keeping up with mild switches. I was in the zone today, it was such a blast. When shooting a great 25 shot group and you reach the 20s, you start to pucker up a bit. But I just kept launching them right through the big rip in the middle. I had just put up a new board at 100 yards. I was able to get a picture of what that hole looked like after I pulled the target it was pretty cool. That’s why I included a picture of a piece of wood with a round hole in it. That’s actually the 25 shot group.
so then what? I would post my magic group and everyone would say what about the other groups? So I forced myself to shoot two more 25 shot groups back to back. I tried to maintain the same intensity. The three 25 shot groups are labeled groups 1, 2 and 3. Was it repeatable to do 1.5 inches again. Maybe in my lifetime one more time. Maybe with a different rifle. That’s why it’s a magic group.
everything was magic, the weather, the rifle, the scope, a little bit of shooter involved, pellets that were absolutely phenomenal, I ran out later on in the day and had to switch and I was not having as much success.
This sport is so fun!
