A little advice FX vs Brocock

Yeah I did write to the guys at Raptor and they got back to me. Unfortunately they said that the .22 is either slug or pellet and that they have not yet nailed down a way to do both from the same barrel, as they have in the bigger calibers. I would really love to have the option in the same barrel. I asked them about LW Polygonal, because Daystate and Brocock shooters have done well with slugs and those barrels. They said that with the poly barrel there was no accuracy, so that was not an option. I am waiting to see what they come up with. I am certainly interested, but I am leaning toward the Brocock HP Magnum style at the moment, because I would be able to do both slugs and pellets and could have one before xmas if I am lucky.

Pat, I have the slug barrel in .22 in mime and it loves all JSB has to offer and I just started putting different slugs through it. Was told to wait till I had a tin of pellets through her before finding the right slugs. So far I have tried VK 24gr Flat base but don’t know if I was sending them fast enough (880). Then tried Griffin 20gr Cup base .217 @ 925fps then Griffin 22gr Dish base .217 @ 950fps and these 15 Dish base were freebies but found the last 2 at this speed was hole in hole...have more coming. The reason JSAR has not found the right slug combo is because they just recently received the .22 TJ slug barrels (I think mine was only their second one they received in .22) and have only tried NSA slugs and not all of them as they are REALLY busy getting the Raptors out the door! So, I am a guinea pig (a very willing one!) to find slugs that will shoot in this barrel. There are now quite a few slug makers with many different weights with different bases and I will be slowly whittling down some. It is a “slug” barrel and do know that mines barrel likes the Dish base so far. Slugs need to be tested at many different speeds over a chrony....whew! LOL! I’ll report back later on my findings! It’s an exhausting labor of love! That’s why all the Impact owners share their info on slugs, many more Impacts out there than Raptors with slug barrels! The 22gr Dish base flew faster than the lighter 20gr Cup base did by 25fps on same HST setting! Go figure! It’s just a matter of time when I find the different slugs this barrel likes. The Bantam HP was on my list...great rifle! I have a Compatto, Brocock makes excellent high quality PCP’s.

Ah ok, tell me more. So that barrel that is shooting slugs, how does it do with pellets and is it pellet fussy?

Also, have you shot any heavy slugs out and what kind of FPE are you getting?

This is certainly sounding interesting.

Pat, I have only shot JSB heavies (18.13) and 24.43 Redesigned and they were lasers! I did try the VK 24gr Flat base slugs but I only adjusted the HST to accommodate the 20-22gr slugs but the 24gr VK’s were going 880fps but not accurately...the 22gr Dish base @ 950 were hole in hole at 20yds with the last 2 I had. This is definitely a 60ft/lb gun so power is not an issue! Slug testing is a long slow tedious process as speed along with barrel twist rate combined with each barrels tendencies with each slug is time consuming or say the least! I received the 22gr Dish yesterday and will throw more down range next week.

Hi Ranchibi,

Thanks for that extra info. What is the farthest distance you have shot groups at with pellets? With slugs? And how did they perform at those distances? I can put hole on hole with a spitball at 20 yards (not really), but what I want to know is how accurate is it from a great distance!

Hell, 60 foot pounds is a wallop and I would love to dish that out on a bunny; but I need to feel certain that the gun can perform at distance.

How is the adjustability of the reg in that gun and do you feel that it is just too powerful for most of the lead you want to sling with it?

Thanks again

Hi DAS,

Yeah, I thought about a few of those guns but then got taken by the FX barrel and caliber changing stuff and now I am on my way back towards greater simplicity but with a lot of power. Once I found that I could potentially get a regulated .22 that would shoot 45 or even more FPE, it seduced me. I really want to be able to take a heavy slug and sling it a long way if I need to, but also be able to easily dial it back to shoot closer as well. Do any of the guns you mention have the ability to put out so much energy in a regulated gun?

@rabbittblaster, my Bantam Sniper HR goes from 13 FPE to 32 FPE, by simply turning power level down and using lighter pellets. So I go from killing pigeons at 50-60 yards at full power. To killing sparrows in the barn at 10-15 yards without putting holes in the roof or walls. This is in addition to having an externally adjustable regulator. Also adjusting hammer spring tension is super simple. This gun performs in the field and on the bench. I would buy my Compatto and Bantam again, they are that good. If Brocock made these with side levers they would be eating FX’s lunch.

The farthest I’ve shot it is with pellets (18.13) is 60yds...1/3” in perfect conditions before it was fully settled in.
