A good shot, a fantastic retrieve

Penny and I have learned to hunt together this summer, disposing of chipmunks. She’s been running and finding chipmunks for me most of the summer; which I found amazing.

this week she did her second actual retrieve. However, it was beyond the call of duty on both ends. First, the chipmunk went flying when I hit it, Penny was on it like a dart. She went jumping over and under trees and branches until she had that thing in her mouth. Very cool.

it gets better. She won’t drop it. I can’t grab a possibly half dead varmint with a bare hand. Pheasant yes, a ground rat, no. Stalemate, then she jumps up on the tree in the picture, sets the chipmunk down, and looks at me. She knows I set them on trees. It started to fall the first time she set it down, and she re-grabbed it and dragged it back up to the middle of the tree 🌳 trunk. Then she looked up at me like there you go.

we learned to walk on trees together when she was a little pup.

I was so proud of her when she reminded me of Marley.

No I don’t eat them, but if you want to try some, post your address.
