A custom bullet mold for Huben K1

Hey guys.

I have had Huben K1 for a while now and personally I am a big fan of the gun. As some you you might know I have a custom barrel in it that allows me to shoot accurately with higher energies than the standard barrel. JSB Jumbo Beast is a good pellet and can be shoot at energies close to 120 joules (88 ft lbs) but they still have the standard pellet shape and get unstable if shoot over 80 yards. I found very frustrating that Huben did not develop a bullet for it as it was showed in their fist video.

To make a long story short (too late), I decided to design a bullet mold for it. I know that it is a semi auto air gun and the idea to cast bullets is time consuming but if you are shooting for accuracy and long range, then you are not gonna shoot in bursts but you are going to take time,... and besides, you can still use JSB bests for rapid shooting.

Of course designing and making a prototype mold will be expensive so I decided to post this thread to see if any of you would be interested in purchasing this mold.

Here are some specs (ideas) for the mold:
- it would have 8 cavities
- the approximate weight would be around 40 grains or a little less
- It will be designed for best accuracy and good ballistics coefficient
- It would be designed for minimum friction in the barrel - optimized for airguns in general, not just Huben (while still remaining accuracy)
- There would be more variants possible to purchase more different sizes (depending on the barrel), .222 to 223 for sure, maybe even more...
- There will be a possibility to order a hollow point version for you hunter out there
- The approximate price would be about 100 EUR (around 110 USD) including shipping worldwide.

I have the design already sketched (of course you will see similarities with already existing molds but not in those dimensions)

wlbryce: hollow point will be available
cernunnos: there will be a few option for sizes so I would not worry about that. Sizing will also be possible, just get a bigger size mold and an appropriate sizer for your barrel. The mold will also work in the stock chocked barrel you just have to pice a smaller diameter (or size them)
T3PRanch: "boat tail" is the design I will be using. This was my initial idea.

Gregor, good to know that youre still working on it! Good to see that 16:1 twist barrel compared to s}#%^*y original 17+:1 LW barrel improved your grouping from 60 to 80 yards!

Casting bullets? You can always get custom .221 Lee sizer and size off the shelf .220 jacketed bullets - good up to 70-80 yards from LW barrel and weight in 40s grain range, Falls apart after that.

After slow spinning projectile passes trajectory apogee and starts down fall - vertical velocity component creates relative "wind factor" that causes spiraling - a bit more twist is what you need ...

my huben is apart for 10:1 barrel, I'm slow machinist - will take me few more weenends to countour it to huben spec. I'll update another thread then.

Peole: I have spent a lot of time searching for a bullet that would fit Huben ant it is not the problem only in the sizing but also the length. Huben accepts only up to 11 mm bullets in length. This is quite annoying but it does makes sense to have relatively short bullets if the twist is slow...

If you know any bullet that would fit Huben, please let me know. It has to be lead (no copper jacket), it has to be only 11 mm long, as heavy as possible and (and this is extremely important) it has to have low friction. This is not a firearm and the pressure - power is limited.

This is the reason I am developing this mold, but if it already exists then it makes no point. So I will really be grateful if any one knows for a mold that or a bullet that would work with Huben

Cernunnos: That sounds like a standard Huben barrel (they use standard LW airgun choked barrel with 1:17.7 twist)

I have, they do not have it in .22 and the one in the .22 title is probably too long (judging by the weight). I have written them several times and did not get any response.
The sizing die is not a problem, it is easy to make (it has to be accurate of cores).
The closest to what we are looking for is:

but it is too long and also needs to be sized to .222
They also do not make molds with 8 cavities...
I must admit that they have a great selection in general.

I already have a design for boat tail bore riding bullet that will weigh 41 grains and hollow point about 39 grain...

Hi.1. V-max does not fit even without plastic tip, there are others that fit2. Sizing will ruin the copper coat and after sizing, the friction will still be too high3. Who is willing to pas about 24$ for 100 bullet and then ruin them with sizing

The only alternative would be bullets for LR but thy are also usually tool long and IMPOSSIBLE to get​. Relive me I have tried...

but I never got around to order them, I doubt that they would be accurate because the contacting surface with the barrel is too short...

Yes, many times. I had them even before they were under H&N. I had high hopes for that pellet but unfortunately, the diameter is too small to be accurate. They are 5,52 and the grooves on the air gun bore are 5,62... You could buy two version before they were bought by H&N (5,52 and 5,60 mm) but now they are only in 5,52 as far as I know. I still have some from before H&N but they are in 5,52...

I have been hunting with a 1st Gen. Daystate Air Ranger 80 since 2006. I had the same problem with the lighter rounds, then I found the Daystate Varminter .223 H.P. that solved my problem.
I haven't received my Huben yet, so I am disappointed to find out that the max length is 11mm, as these are are .456 or 11.48mm 39.5 gr.
I have ordered several different size cast bullets from The Bull Shop. 
The Varminter H.P.'s are .225 and my barrel is .224 so they are snug, but the gun likes them, and shoots straight, I ordered the cast .224,

Do you know what the Barrel size is?

Yes, the magazine length is an unfortunate thing... Every bullet that I find is just a slightly longer. Huben has another limitation: magazine hole diameter. It is only about 5,67 mm (.223), so the typical .224 bullets does not fit.
This is why I decide to make my own custom mold.
I have actually had some success with my first custom made mold, the weight is 39,2 grain and it is a boat tail design. I still want to improve accuracy, it seem that this gun does not like a boat tail design because it is shooting out of the magazine, like revolver and it is not possible to make a tight enough fit in the magazine. Pellets does not have this problem because the skirt expands. The back side of the magazine hole is larger (about .225), so I intend to make a flat tail with a larger end of the bullet (.224 - 225) so that the magazine will also size it to .223 when it passes to the barrel.

The energy is quite impressive I get up to 130 joules (over 93 ft-lbs), the velocity of these 39,2 grain bullets are over 315 m/s (1033 FPS).

The bore diameter on Huben is 5,62 mm (about .2212, - .2213) but is has a choke of .02 mm. My custom barrel is the same dimension but without a choke. I intend to try also a different custom barrel with 5,64 bore (.222) and a slightly faster twist (about 1 - 14,4")

I guess I will have to shoot the 5000 rounds ordered through the Air Ranger, because none of them will fit in the Huben! ;o(
Thanks for taking all of your time to figure this out for us!! 
The problem I have had with the JSB Beast is the tail is fragile and if it is isn't perfectly inserted into the rifle it will distort slightly. The Daystate Varminter H.P. .223 is robust, and has little issues with distortion. last week I e-mailed Tony at Daystate, and he mentioned that they discontinued those rounds a few years ago. Damn the bad luck!!

You should know that the Huben for US is slightly different that form EU, Mrodair also claims that they have a different barrel that we do. I do not know if this is true or not...
I love the gun but I have Huben that they haven't thought about ammunition for such a strong gun! The also put in too thin barrel (12 mm) with too slow twist for shooting bullets... Yes, unfortunately they do not have any bullet like pellets for airguns anymore. I would like to try these 30 grain bullets:
