A couple tree rats today

Had the afternoon off work today. So I took the new .25 Avenger to the woods for its first outing. 32 degrees and calm with 1/2” of new snow on the ground. The squirrels were working for acorns everywhere. I had 3 young grays chasing each other up and down an old den tree. I only wanted a couple good size ones for a dinner, so they got a pass. It wasn’t a long hunt. But it was fun and it got me out for the first time since deer season started the first of October. The first was a fox at about 40 yards and the second, a large gray at 68 yards. Have to say, the rifle shoots nice. But that plastic stock has to go. Every little stick I bumped, or my bingos tapping on it sounded like I just opened a new can of beer. That will be taken care of by the next hunt.

Nice shooting, especially at those distances! The Freedoms I have (back when they were working) were accurate like that. I miss that accuracy as I now only have a Fortitude that works in .177. It isn't terrible, but the Freedoms were much more consistently accurate and the Avenger is basically the same gun in different format. Whatever they have done wrong with the poppet, etc, they have a great barrel!

And that makes me wonder if I could swap the barrel from one of my Freedoms to the Fortitude? Probably not... just wishful thinking... (grin)

Got another limit today. It took some work to do it. Snowed all day and kept filling the scope cups and binoculars. I missed dang near as many as I got. It was hard judging distance.

Nice dinner right there. I bought a set of clear scope covers made by Butler Creek, the Blizzard model's, to help with the snow and rain collecting. Wet snow doesn't let them work so well, but below freezing and they stay reasonably clean. I think Rain-X applied to the covers would help too.

Had another great hunt with a limit today. It was 5* with a new snow on the ground this morning. Calm but cloudy. Made my best shot yet with the new to me MK3. Walking along the open creek bank I spied this guy just lying on a limb about 30’ feet up in a Hickory tree. Range finder said 81 yards. Because he was watching me walk his way, I didn’t dare try to get closer to use a rest. I just resighted the new Alpha6 scope at 40 yards as most shots are somewhat close. So I am dead on at 75 with 2 mil dots. The picture says the rest of the story.

This one has a bit more of a story. I was watching him barking at something. While I was rangfinding him at 51 yards, something caught my eye. As I turned my head to the left, I seen a Fox sneaking towards him. About that time a flock of Tom turkeys exploded behind the squirrel. Still not sure if the Fox was stalking the squirrel or the turkeys. Anyways, everyone went in different directions. The Fox jumped the creek, the turkeys flew out in the cut corn field and the squirrel went higher up the tree above the creek. A couple minutes later he came out on a limb and I had a nice head shot at him. The little bugger fell dead-smack in the middle of the creek. I stopped long enough to snap a picture before inching down the bank. I slipped on the snow and fell on my butt and slid down the bank. Got one boot full. At least he finished my limit. And I was on my way back to the truck. Only had 1/2 mile walk.

Awesome!

Was the head shot on the gray on purpose?

Good story Nothing like a nice coat of snow.
