55 yards Group Therapy

I found these pics from last summer. Same exact action as original post but at that time it was briefly tested in a Lucas Parsley FT stock.

The stock did not work for me. No thumbs up shooting along with some other drawbacks. It took all of a 20 minute shooting session to determine that we wouldn’t be able to have a lasting and meaningful relationship. LOL.

In order to get the balance right before doing any shooting on target I added over a pound of mercury recoil reducers to the aft end via a Blackhawk cheek piece riser. Now it at least balanced better.

Leo, are you using 8.4 JSB/AA?

Yes, I am using JSB Exacts 8.44 grains 4.53mm pellets (not the best pellets) through my Walther LGU (16J version from Krale), custom Field Target Shop stock, RWS lock mount & Sightron 10-50x60. No tuning kit for the LGU. I had to replace broken factory springs with a Vortek one. Smooth shooter out of the box. Replaced the plastic trigger with a Rowan.

Here is a picture of me during a shoot off at 2019 Worlds in England.

I asked because I also get the same vertical spread at farther distances using 8.4s in my LGU (see pics in beginning of thread), despite the rig having a very low center of gravity and heavy stock (nearly 2lbs in the buttstock). I recall the 7.9s I had at that time grouped pretty tight, but I need to try some other pellets. More group therapy needed👍

I was able to squeeze in a quick group therapy session with my 97k .177 fitted with a 12fpe V-Mach tuning kit. The walnut FT stock that it wore in the first post will soon get a layer or 3 of oil, so for now it’s in a beech stock adapted for better fit/balance: thumb groove, Morgan recoil pad, about 1lb of mercury in the butt and a neoprene cheek piece riser. Now has a Delta Optical Stryker 5-50HD w/ B. Rabbitt 3D printed magnetic sidewheel on the P.Matos picatinny rail.

Shifting mild winds. JSB 7.9 Express (ahhh, that new tin feel🤓). POA was the “®” after CORONA.

Thanks for looking. Be safe out there.

Leo, just wondering what caused the broken springs. Do you think the transfer port size on your 12fpe spec rifle contributed to the problems (too restrictive)? I don't remember if the tp size differed between the 12fpe and high power model in .177.

Johnny,

The original factory spring lasted 18 months shooting 1000 pellets per month on average. Springs will eventually break with use. Vortek springs do not last long. I do not think it has anything to do with the transfer port size.

A quick group session with the 97k with Paul Short Ti tune. 45x mag used. JSB 7.9. Barrel freshly swabbed with a couple WD40 sprayed patches followed by 2 tight dry patches.

1st group upper right I allowed 3 hash marks to compensate for a fairly consistent full value cross breeze.

Noticing that the majority were to the right of POA, I settled on 2 hash marks. 2 were not enough as the 2 shots left of POA show. There was a lull and a shift to the right. Not much of a shift, after taking the shot I saw the flag was fluttering and gently getting pulled to the right.

Next group on the dot on the middle left is just plain ugly🤭😂. 16 clicks up to clear tall blades of grass (ranged at 53 yards), but I still managed to hit a couple. By this time breeze started to have a bit more tenacity. Gotta love the wind game.

Wind died down a bit and decided to take out my Theoben SLR 98 .177 TH for a GROUP THERAPY session. Two 6 shot groups, seated, over the arm FT position and lots of concentration with that trigger😉. 6 shots because I had a shot go a little farther to the right than what I’d like, so shot another to make up for it. Not the best groups by far but the potential is there. I’ve always imagined what an SLR 98 .177, inside of a balanced target stock with a top tier high mag scope mounted and a 3-4 ounce trigger would be capable of. I’ll just have to use my imagination.

It was always designed from the get go to be a lightweight hunter, but I like to try and push the boundaries. Today I used JSB 8.4 4.51 head diameter.

After these groups I picked up the SLR and my bum bag and brought it in close to 27 yards. Found a high spot where I could clear the grass and shot a couple more groups.

For the 1st 5 shot group I held on the “R” registered trademark after usps.com. A bit rough. More focus on the 2nd group, holding on a smaller target: the “.” in usps.com

After my 3rd shot on the 1st group, I noticed a fly land to the left of where I was shooting. Shuffled my feet a few mm’s, repositioned, paused breathing, focus-hold-squeeze. Saw a little bit of bug juice appear around the pellet hole through my scope. Nice when that happens🤓.

This afternoon the wind was strong with frequent gusts of 25-30mph. I grabbed a 'newish' rig and set out to shoot a group at 55 yards.

The rifle is an HW77K MK2 .20 cal, freshly tuned, action now set in a walnut target stock and shooting very nice.

My scope dope is in 2 yard intervals from 10-74 yards, and for a 54 yard shot that's 58 clicks up from my 25 yd zero. Close enough, 54 clicks up it is. Some shots got blown to the left, but overall the group was decent. POA was the star below the word 'mail' in the middle of the pic.

Ran some errands, and several hours later I was able to get out and take a few shots on my 55 yard Paul Porch woodpecker field target with a full size kill zone. There was almost zero wind now and the sky was clear and blue. Flip flops, bum bag, rig & pellets, saweeeet😉

This time I gave it 60 clicks up from my 25 yd zero. Here's a video taking 3 shots from cold and sharing some info about the rifle set up:

2 out of 3, hey, I'm not complaining. 😁

Had a fun challenge the other day, trying to hit a Coca Cola bottle cap at 55 yds. Just using a quick trajectory chart, haven't verified at that distance yet. A bit of wind. Took 6 shots, I nailed the elevation adjustment after the first shot, had to come down 16 clicks. The rest was figuring out the wind.

1st shot felt lovely, but was high and not enough holdoff for wind. Down 16 clicks.
