3yr update on my yong heng (don't be like me)

It's been a good run. And she's still chugging along.

I've killed it a few times, running inferior oil (royal purple). Running it too long, too hot. Shutting off/starting under load. I scored cylinder #1, forgetting to put in the wrist pin retainer, and resurfaced by hand. Lost a little compression there, and reduced check valve pressure to fix. Broke the crank bolt, (along with two connecting rods) likely from detonation from royal purple. Also bent my crank from using no crank case to cylinder gasket(piston hitting cylinder head). And galled the crank where is fits onto the motor shaft (from operation with loose/broken crank bolt).

Pressure gauge, rear cooling fan, and crank bolt have been upgraded. All electrical connections are now soldered and shrink wrapped.

As it sits, it has a walking connecting rod. Running corena s2 p150 oil, no measurable wear on conrod journal with several fills. An expremely high compression 2nd stage, a lower than normal compression 1st stage, an epoxied crank/drive shaft snout. And she runs like butter. Has been running like this for a year and a half now. I'm surprised every time it does, haha. Still builds pressure well past 250bar.

In summary, use good oil, don't run hot (much over 55c) or for too long (15min). Don't start or stop under load. Oh, and don't delete your gaskets!

Preach it brother!!!

mine has been running strong for coming up 2 years in 2 months. Only thing I replace/fixed was the pressure gauge, I have not opened her up once yet. Thanks to you and many other who have shared all the great information and tips, mine is running like the day I got it even filling 60minute tank from empty multiple times.

BTW which oil do you use? I too found royal purple not great, been using good quality transmission oil(not even synthetic) for well over a year and the YH seems to really like it.

LH bolt was sourced from the great ali express, haha. I tried to source locally and stateside with absolutely no luck. It is a grade 12.9 I believe. I think I actually broke one of the upgraded ones too, I think from smashing the piston into the cylinder head.

Oil is shell corena s2 p150 as stated in OP. Intended for use with high pressure compressors.

There's tons of great info and experience here for sure! If I'd known better, I may have been able to avoid most if not all repairs.

Comments like this, and the OP's picture, make me confused. I've read so many times here & other forums, about how the YH is only intended to fill small tanks, like directly to guns. Then, I see this! I have 2 SCBAs that I'd be filling, then the guns from those. Do you fellows run the YH in multiple 15-minute cycles? How much cool down time does it typically need between cycles?

Indeed. 10-15 minute intervals for me. Often only 1 is needed to top off my 9 litre tank. If more than 1 interval is needed I will close the tank valve, bleed the lines, then shut the compressor off. But leave the water pump running. Then I'll come back to it in about 10 minutes, maybe more.

Startup process is the opposite. Start compressor, seal lines, build some pressure and slowly open the tank valve.

I have been running mine for well over 15min at a time. Though there are things I have done as well that help keep things working.

These pumps can really take a beating and keep on going. Take some time to polish the jug and the head. Make this mating surface as clean as possible and you will get much better seal between the two and less air leakage. Keep up on a good maintenance schedule and you will be fine. My Tuxing also has the coffee can looking head as well, so that may help to keep things under control as well.

Just realized that I have a different compressor, though assume the quality is the same being as it comes from china. Sorry about the confusion

Run time really depends on the air temp and water temp, during the summer I let it run about 10-12 minutes and in the winter it can go much longer. In the summer especially I use the 2 bucket method so the warm water doesn't mix with hot water, my compressor head temp is rock steady within 5 degrees. I only shut down when the motor temp gets above 55 degrees (secondary temp gauge) and I have a strong fan pointing at it to help it cool the motor and that helps a ton in the summer. It will take quite some time to fill a 60 minute tank from empty so I would just pay the 20 bucks to get the first fill then use the compressor to top off, not that it can't do it but it's just a hassle.

Like I commented above, I will just run till something changes. Think my longest run as been around 45 min, and I saw zero ill effect. You can fill SCBA tanks with ease just need to be careful about it. Again I also have cleaned up the jug and the head, and replaced the seals on mine so that may be helping things greatly. Make sure to work in the compressor the first few times and everything should be fine. Don't expect to go fill an empty SCBA tank the first time you run the pump.

Again on my Tuxing, though should be the same with the Heng. Sorry for the confusion
