.257 Texan Is Better Than Expected

I've had my .257 for a couple of weeks now and it has been easy to tune and more accurate than I expected it to be after spending some time with one in .308 .

I wasn't able to get a tight enough shot string at the velocity I wanted out of the 85 grn NSA slugs , so I settled on the 65 grn tuned to a 6 shot string at avg 1023 fps with an extreme spread of 30 fps . Then used a limbsaver barrel tuner to get 1 inch or less groups . Have done some plinking out to 300 yards with great results , and took my first groundhog with it today @ 277 yards Useing the Aztec 5.5x25 that I robed off my crown . I have a Sidewinder 6x24 to go on it when my adjustable rings get here next week . Also added a DonnyFL Condor adapter and a Shogun , hammer slap is now louder than the muzzle report .

The dime will cover 4 of the 5 completely .

Out of the box the accuracy of the 65 and 85 grain Neilsens were about the same at around 1 to 1 1/4 . The 80 grn were at 1.5 to 1.6 . The limbsaver brought the 65 and 85's down to 3/4 avg at 5 inches from the frame , at 3 inches from the frame it brought the 80's down to right at 1 inch . My best group with the 65s was .630 . The above group was a quickie I shot yesterday after installing the Shogun and got so excited I pulled the second shot , wasnt paying attention to the target but listening to the rifle instead lol . The limbsaver is a pita to adjust but in my opinion it is worth the effort . I bought it from Hunters Supply.

Hi Groundhog,

great news as I'm thinking of buying texan .257 also. If possible, can you post the shot string with corresponding FPS with 65gr NSA slugs? 30fps avg spread is actually pretty good, it's only around .15MOA at 100 meters with 65gr NSA hp boat-tail slugs.

Anyway, the results you posted are pretty good, even with all the flex with AF frame. This might be a very accurate gun with proper stock, for example with maddog recon or ranger.
