.25 slug liner

Guys I love to tinker with my impact , no matter how good I get it shooting within a couple wks I'm switching calibers , and barrels . it's like a bad habit but I really enjoy it and trying to make it shoot better and better. Any way I havnt really been overly excited about the x barrels , had a .30.xbarrel but my smooth twist shot way better and at higher fps.then I traded for a .25 x and wasn't really impressed with it either . it shot ok but again I got better results with the regular st barrel . so I thought why not try a slug liner . I got it yesterday but only slugs I had was hunter supply 48 s and some h&n grizzles... Both sucked at 35 yd. Then I tried some mk2 s WOW !!! Looked great at 35 yd . and it's shooting then with gun wide open right at 900fps.

Then I tried AA 25.4 s turned down to 910 fps on power wheel setting 2 . awesome also !!!. Then today I went to the river to try the mk2 at more distance . didn't shoot paper but at 119yds they was hitting same hole in the river bank . I'm real impressed with the liner as just a upgrade pellet barrel so far. Here's a pic of the 35 yd shots yesterday 5 shot groups , don't have a pic of the AAs but looked the same. : ) now I wonder why these didn't come with the impact to begin with ?

I'm anxious to shoot some 100 yd on paper but rain in the forecast . I ran down to the river after work today just to try some longer range with it . was kind of wondering after watching Matt Dubbers YouTube video on twist rates . from what I took from it was faster twist isn't really desired with pellets ? But isn't the benjamin marauder and some other accurate rifles faster twist ? And it wasn't just the mk2 s that shot better . the AAs made 1 tiny hole with 5 shots also , and shooting faster . I always had to shoot then around 840 to get good accuracy before. I like 900s much better : ) looking forward to testing some barracuda hunters and other pellets now .

From what I gathered the slug liners aren't proving great with the slug offerings in .25 out there but it does seem, as you have found that they are actually handling the the regular pellets as well if not better than the original twist rates. I am busting to get down the range to put some of the mk2's through it but with a newborn, work and weather I just can't find the time to get there. Look forward to seeing the groups you get especially pushing them faster.

I had a similar experience today while tinkering with .25 Crown... I had the 34gr. MK1's shooting one hole accurate at 50 yards in the "A" liner at 890 ft/s for 60 fpe, and then just for fun I tried shooting them out of the slug liner to see what would happen. I was surprised to discover they were still accurate...so I kept pushing them faster and faster until I got them all the way up to an average of 950 ft/s! And even at 950 ft/s they were shooting laser accurate into one small hole at 50 yards almost effortlessly for an average of 68 fpe.

So tomorrow I am going to shoot them at 985 ft/s to see if they are still accurate at 50 yards...if so, that would be 73.5 fpe! It will be interesting to find out...and then of course I am going to have to go out to the range on Saturday or Sunday and see how they do at 75 and a 100..and guess I should probably try some of the MKII also while I am at it just to see what they do. I might just be onto something here...

All the best, Chuck

Well I got back in the yard between showers and shot a couple groups . also I really haven't done much of a tune . gun is running pretty much wide open . I do turn power wheel down to 2 for the aa s. getting about 910 fps on them , didnt check the barracudas just shot on power 3 with them . and it looks promising .? Just thought I'd share .one other thing. As stoti mentioned with slugs , i think the pellets start shooting better also after a few shots .

The three groups at the very top was shot from left to right and it's pretty clear they got tighter in the last one .

Wish I had a bigger yard !

Today I continued my experiment with shooting 34's out of Crown slug liner. The 34.1gr. MKI's shot laser accurate at 50 yards with an avg. of 970 ft/s at 71 fpe, and also with an avg. of 1015 ft/s at 78 fpe. The MKII were giving me what I would call "hunting accuracy" at 50 yards.

Here is some pics from today...something odd you will notice is that the MKI 34's were more accurate at 970 ft/s than they were at 900 ft/s. The ones at 970 ft/s were the most accurate, but the ones at 1015 ft/s went into about a half inch there which isn't too terrible. 😉 Tomorrow I am going to the 100 yd. rifle range to see what this Crown will do at 75 & 100. Wish me luck!

This Shoot-n-See target shows how the MKII shot at 50 yards at 970 ft/s...probably good enough for hunting but not for target shooting. I have to say that the MKII were shot straight from the can, whereas the MKI's were cleaned, weighed to exactly 34.1 grains, and lubed with Napier...but I don't think it made this much difference.

Well 50yd groups are very very good but I believe the 75 and 100 I can beat with my smooth twist barrel . shooting the Kings heavy. the baracuda hunter still look promising at 75. But water came up to fast to test them at 100. It was cold and pretty windy but the trees slow the wind a bit . I get some slugs tomarrow and maybe it will be better conditions . I'll also try the pellets again when it's better weather

Ok J I made it to the 100 yd. range today with the Crown .25 and Slug Liner, and here is group shooting the JSB Heavy MKI weighing 34.2 grains, lubed with Napier, at an average velocity of 1015 ft/s for a yield of 78 ft. lbs energy. For reference the red dot on the target I used for an aiming point measures 5/8"... the centers of the holes farthest apart are about 1.5". This is not really acceptable for target shooting competition but for hunting rabbits at 100 yards it would be wonderful. The MKII shot OK but not nearly as well as the MKI...I am guessing this is due to their smaller skirt size not sealing the bore as well as the MKI's.

To answer the question regarding how I get this much power out of this Crown...I installed a Huma Gen 3 Extra High Pressure Regulator (140-195 Bar), I also modified the hammer spring guide and added a 90 grain weight, and also reset the screw in the hammer adjuster block so as to allow the adjustment knob to sit on MAX at the 12:00 position. Here are pictures of the modified hammer spring guide and weight. And J, the new Huma Gen 3 Extra High Pressure Regulator ran flawlessly in the Crown at 180 bar.

J, regarding the length of the hammer weight, I will tell you that if it were 1 mm longer it would bind against the tip of the spring guide rod and prevent the gun from cocking. If for any reason you wanted to use a longer heavier weight then you would have to shorten the spring guide rod accordingly, but anything more than 90 grains is really unnecessary.

Great tinkering and results Chuck! If youre getting that power with 34gr id love to see what youd get with a few eunjins or slugs i bet youd get 85 if not more at that tune.

Thanks Chuck , your finding are pretty much what I found also . only mine was a much lower speed . if my slugs dont do any better I'm just going back to my standard st . I can repeatedly shoot these groups with it at 870 fps with the King heavy .

But the slug liner for sure out does anything i own out to 50 yd . I just like shooting farther most of the time .
