.25 RAW HM1000X LRT - JSB King Heavy VS FX Hybrid Slugs

Over the last couple of years, I have tried about every slug that has come out, working to see if they would perform any better, from an accuracy perspective, in my Ken Hicks' tuned RAW, than the JSB King Heavy 33.95 grain slugs it was designed to shoot and tuned to.

To date, none of the slugs tried has come close to matching the accuracy performance of the JSB King Heavy pellets out to 100 yards.

Reviewing the various Youtube videos regarding the FX Hybrids, I ordered a 100 each in .22 (to try in my RW HP) and .25 to try in my RAW.

Today was test day for the RAW. The wind was variable and swirling around some between 3 and 5 mph. I started on my indoor range (18 yards) with the chronograph to compare the basic data. You can see the Chrono info on photos 2, 3, and 5 as found below.

I then proceeded to the outdoor range and fire test groups at 50 yards and 87 yards.

The elevation drop was less with the slugs, but only slightly, with not as much difference as I thought there would be given the video hype.

The good news - the FX slugs shot closer to the King Heavy pellets in terms of accuracy, than anything I have tried to date. The bad news, they were not as accurate as the pellets over all, even at 87 yards (the farthest I can shoot at my home range). Understanding they may have more terminal killing power due to penetration and expansion capabilities, most of my shooting is at paper and steel where accuracy is most important. So I will continue to buy pellets for less money, but it was a fun experiment.

One more thing, the slugs definitely foul the barrel faster. I had to stop mid test to clean my barrel, as all of a sudden, the pellets started spraying more like a shotgun than a rifle. Once I cleaned the barrel, it was right back to performing as it should.

Every shot was fired from a sandbag on a bench under ideal conditions.

I did the same thing on my .25 cal. The jsb 34gr are so good at 100 yards and in theres no point. I finally built a dedicated slug gun in .30 and couldnt be happier. I messed around with tuning, barrels etc on the .25 and the jsb’s won everytime! So no sense in messing with perfection. If your hell bent on slugs like I was, build a gun for them. If not, enjoy the hell out of those pellets there awesome! And great shooting btw :)

Couldn’t have been said any better. I love shooting slugs and have shot some tiny groups but they just aren’t as accurate as pellets on a calm day.

Interesting that you are getting close to 2 inch groups with either hybrid and King heavy pellets at 87 yards. That in itself needs some investigating because they are perfectly capable of 1 inch group at 100 yards so your tune might be a little too hot(pellet) or need harmonic tuning since RAW has a really long free floating barrel. Your ES is 28 which is the beginning of POI change, need to be well under 20. Your 50 yard group has vertical spread(not wind) and could be caused by your speed difference. For good groups try to get SD of 5 or lower and ES of 10-12 or lower. RAW are expensive guns, I'm surprised to see such high SD and ES. Have you tried to clean your barrel or season your barrel? Something doesn't seem right at all.

That being said I've seen dime sized groups with NSA 33 and 36 grain slugs at 50 yards, they are absolutely laser beams and when the wind picks up a little pass 5 mph with gusts the King heavy pellets are becoming useless while the slugs are still dead center like there isn't any wind at all at 100 yards. Only need to hold tiny little bit even pass 10-15 MPH wind, it's awesome. Same can be said with NSA 23 and 25.8 grain .22 slugs out of my impact with superior liner. Freaking laser beams!
