1st & 2nd focal plane! (Video)

Superb demonstration of extracting and exploiting the capabilities of Second Focal Plane telescopic rifle sights. Been shooting fixed since day one & never knew these perks existed (completely oblivious to it). Who said "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". Your batting a 1,000 Doc. I love your video's & look forward to them with eager anticipation as I imagine others do also.

May the sun always be to your back,

Thanks so much guys! Making these videos is enjoyable to me, and all the more so when i know it actually helped someone.

mojo, i say with full certainty that if i had to, i would sell every gun i owned before letting one of my nightforces go. To me they are just not replaceable. Well, literally lol. Im not sure when i would ever be able to drop that cash on scopes again. But Guns come and go. A good optic? It makes whatever gun its on shine.

Great explanation and video +1, the one drawback for me is you need to reduce your magnification the further out you go if you dont want to click. Seems counter to why having a higher power scope? For me and IMO I just looked for a FFP that doesn't skimp on quality and giving you a real thick reticle on full power. It's all personal preference and I'm sure I could teach my brain to do all the conversions for the SFP. But I'm a holdover guy and that's what i know so it works. Thanks again for the education.

Excellent review and explanation. I am a big fan of sfp, sadly it is getting increasingly difficult to get a sfp scope with some of the more up to date features of a ffp.

What would those features be?

The SFP scopes I've had haven't lacked anything my FFP scopes had.

. Some of the features I like are zero stop on the elevation turret, true 1 left 1 right markings on the windage turret. Generally there is a greater choice of reticles on ffp while none of these are of huge importance to me, it is slightly frustrating when I like the look of the spec of a scope, then to be disappointed that they is no sfp in the range. It is true that some of the top draw scopes do offer sfp scopes, but these are normally made for long range target shooting, magnification is generally too high for my needs as is the price tag.

The drawback that you mention for FFP scopes is not present with a properly designed FFP reticle.

A SFP reticle stuck in a FFP scope often does not work all that well. Some manufacturers are starting to address that with specially designed FFP reticles.

Though not a perfect FFP reticle, I have an Athlon Helos which can handle 35moa of holdover without clicking. And since it's FFP, no re-calculation (conversion) at the various magnifications.

Some newer FFP reticle designs can go to 80moa:

I liked this video, but for me:

-First focal plane all day! I have used a ton of scopes through the years, and can’t see myself putting a second focal plane scope on any of my rifles or air guns again.

I thought that way when I got my FFP scope. Then when I started dialing elevation for every shot it didn't matter, so SFP is what I use now. If I want to hold on the reticle, I'll do it at 10 or 20x (where my scope is calibrated).

This is why I will be putting a nightforce atacr 7-35x56 in sfp on my long range airgun build I do (whenever I get around to it).

Fine MOAR-T reticle w/ calibrations for both 17.5 and 35x, 100 moa elevation of perfect tracking. Hard to beat this combo, only problem is the price tag....but it could be worse. Buy once cry once lol

That looks like a good reticle if you want SFP. I'd prefer the ATCR 7-35x56 FFP with the MOAR F1 reticle. It would be my choice if I was inclined to spend the money for a Nightforce. The reticle layout is not perfect, but better than most FFP scopes. And since it is FFP, the MOA marks are usable at all magnification settings (not just 17.5x and 35x).

I am aware of the advantages of SFP, so they do have their place too.

It’s definitely a preference issue, and I agree there are many good ffp scopes now. For me, the reasons I have stated make me love sfp.

Norm loves the fine reticles but hates the magnification changes. Often he will be like “ i held two”. Ill look over and he will not be at full mag, and i say “no you didnt”. Then he makes “chicken clucking” noises lolol.

If I was a law enforcement sharpshooter i would chose ffp every time to avoid a catastrophic mental error. But I am not, so I prefer the second and If i make a mistake, well... its just a pigeon.

I have also been shooting this same nf scope for a long long time, so mistakes are few and far between. Im more likely to forget to dial back to zero than to make a reticle error.

I'm not a law enforcement sharp shooter, but when I'm in a full combat starling shootout situation at 80 yards then a sparrow at 100 and a woodchuck at 125 all within a minute, math is the last thing I need to do. All i do is aim on, hold 2 over and then hold 4 over. My pesting goes from zero to chaos in seconds. Dont have an issue with either scope styles, SFP on my PCPs just isn't for me is all. Used them for years and still do on powder burners. Big change for me was spending the cheddar on good high end FFP scopes.
