.177 Predator Polymag performance (graphic)

Looking for best critter ammo for a Gamo Maxxim. Latest test and autopsy is of the Predator Polymag. This was a 8 yard shot with no exit.

The squirrel leaped from tree and ran full tilt for 20 yards before dropping hard.

Pellet expanded to between .22-.19 depending on where measured.

In summary I was happy with the performance. Good penetration. Good expansion. I suspect the expansion might have even been more if it hadn't connected with the elbow bone. There were lead shavings stuck in the elbow.

Man when I bought my 177 Vulcan # 2 I thought I had just got a paper puncher, No hunting for this little 177 Not even the 10 gr pellets made a difference,

Then I turned the power up to 980 FPS with the little 8gr Polymags , Game on now this is a hunting gun and the sparrows and the euro doves that taken a big hit with the mighty 177 Vulcan. Before I feed the doves to my turtles I have to check for exit holes, If I find none I have to go digging for the pellet and the Polymags do explode in the bird and expand very well,

Mike

The Gamo Maxxim is throwing the Polymags at 865 fps for 13.3 fpe. 980 fps is cooking at 17.1 fpe. I bet they smack quite good.

I liked the expansion performance of the H&N Terminator's I recovered too...but at closer ranges I was getting pass throughs which suggests their expansion and energy transfer isn't quite as good as the Polymags. Having said that they anchored a squirrel quite well at 28 yards.

Here is another data point. Launched at 916 fps from RTI Priest. 15 fpe. The Priest is turned down from stock power to make it "friendlier" with more pellets. Expanded to .215. Pine squirrel was facing me with head down. Entered back of neck and traveled below spine and lodged in hip. 100% energy dump. Squirrel dropped quickly and was motionless in seconds.

Imagine how nice the 177 hades are going to be.

Not even close. I had a pass through on a head shot, with a Hades that was screaming fast (940 FPS) and the exit wound was unimpressive. In comparison, a similar shot with a Polymag blew a huge hole on the exit side. Hades are only slightly better than pure diablos in my experience. There are half a dozen hunting pellets I’d choose before the Hades. They are accurate...but so are Polymags.

Heh. No joke. I have my Leshy is slinging .177 polys at about 1014 fps. Close to popping the sound barrier, I know. Yep. Just a bit hot. I have to say that I have had extremely good results, even pushing 78 yards at times. Leshy is also slinging the 10g JSBs at 942 and seems to do pigeons in efficiently. This is with the 250mm barrel.
