12 FPE, .17 vs .22

My only 12 fpe rifle is spring piston HW97 in .177, so I'm no authority on the subject. But, since you obviously are not looking for a lot of power, I suggest you look at the difference in trajectory between the 17 and 22 options. Seems to me, the advantage in flatter trajectory of the .177 is meaningful. For example, in my situation, I was more interested in having a manageable trajectory that would allow me to hit bottle cap size targets at, say 35 yards, than any advantage the .22 might offer in killing power for pesting or hunting. I have other rifles for those uses.

If you want to give your compresser/pump a break, may I present you with this. 12 ft lb Air Arms Pro Sport in .177 at 50 yds from this past Sunday. I never ran out of air, just daylight.

Have setup a Maximus and marauder both in 12 fpe configurations in 177 and 22 I would say the 177. Many pellet options and shoots different distances easily. 22 keeps you in the lighter pellets which are fewer and figuring drop is much harder. That said if hunting with the two setups I do like the 22 a bit more but for plinking 177. Pellets are a bit cheaper too.

Mine is a converted QB78 to air and a repeater. I can’t recommend an off the shelf 12 fpe pcp since I only have experience with the one I just mentioned.

I like .177 but I also have a 13 fpe .22 spring gun that is very nice to shoot. 12 fpe is plenty of power for targets, plinking and small pests. The 12 fpe guns usually get a pretty high shot count for long time fun. These are both rifles that I just mentioned.

Living in the 12FPE world I can tell you you will see 95 .177's VS 5 .22's out of a hundred here so that should answer your first question.

Secondly .177 pellets are more consistent, .22 is considered a hunting caliber.

My HFT rifle for the last 5 years is a RAW HM1000 in .177 cal at 12 FPE. Dead silent .44 dead accurate. It likes JSB 8.44 gr pellets, but shoots 10.3s pretty well too. Cheaper than a Crown or Daystate, and given that chance to choose again between the three, I'd still take the RAW.

^^^Both of these,^^^ if you want a sub 12fpe for plinking and target shooting then .177 is a no brainier, if however you intend to hunt with it and without getting into the “best calibre debate” my preference is a .22 but that is not to say that a well placed .177 will not do the job or that .22 are not as accurate as .177. It’s just that the higher speed of a .177 makes it less range critical for hold over/under while the .22 although more loopy hit home with more authority.

Intenseaty asked a similar question a while back, with similar recommendations:

My suggestion remains the same - Weihrauch Hw100k in 0.177

Indeed I was just looking for the right 12fpe PCP for me recently. Was pretty set on the HW100, but then I “Discovered” the BSA Ultra SE. At least give it a look. I think it’s going to be the one for me. Mine will be in .177, never even considered the .22.

I like the looks of the new BSA that came out, not sure if it’s in the USA yet. Krale sells the HW100 in 16j pretty cheap. I’ve seen a ton of videos on it and the little rifle performs well!

Hey Matt, here’s ya my link with some good feedback. This is already a pretty dated model, but seems to have some really good things going for it. I also wanted something Short/Small, the newer models are a bit too big for my taste
