10m pistol target

My new AV10 target pistol arrived yesterday, and while I have some things both good and bad to say about it, that seems deserving of a separate post. As I set out to explore this new to me discipline it seemed fair to get set up with a measured 10 meter target at the correct height. The info I found online says 1400mm +/- 25mm to the bullseye from the floor. Obviously the intent is that shooting will be done indoors, but I am making due with what I got at the moment. Constructed of std. PT 2x4s, level top, with a trap it stands 55.5 inches from the dirt, to the bullseye, so dead on within the specs I have found. The shots on the target are the first with the new pistol, and no attempt to move the sights from where they arrived. The first 3 were a bit wide in spread as I got used to the trigger, and target style grip. The next 5 made a nice group left, and low but will probably fit under a quarter. Anyone else shooting 10m pistol, what does your set up look like? Are there any just for fun type shooting matches online anywhere? Hope everyone gets off to a good start in 2022! Like most shooting the advice on 10m is largely to get in as much trigger time as you can, either in active shooting, or at least dry fire type practice. I grabbed 2000 pellets along with the pistol, and am trying to set a goal for myself to shoot at least 1500 of those during the month of January...weather being a major factor unfortunately. Today is going to be in the 50s, but has rain forecasted so maybe there will be opportunity to hunt some paper this morning.

That sounds like fun. I usually just shoot informally at various targets, but recently I’ve started shooting N50 targets to see how I compare to others. It’s a lot of fun to try competition shooting even if it’s by yourself.

There’s a pistol section of the forum and there’s definitely some competition shooting done on the honor system where folks shoot and then see who won. I’d ask this question there and hopefully someone will come up with the information. Good luck and enjoy the AV10, be sure and post pictures of your groups.

Nice setup, just a few clicks away from solid groups on the mark. I move my shooting indoors in the winter. Casual shooting only at this point, had not thought of looking for matches online. Not a bad idea if I can get my form in order. My 10m basement range is torn apart for remodeling now, very basic with the same box sitting on insulation and covered with an old blanket to reduce noise. Thinking of rebuilding a box with hanging fabric / ropes I had years ago that decelerated pellets up to 18 fpe quietly and with no damage. I'll post a pic if when I get it all up and running.

shot 3 targets today, 10 shots each. This is the best of them. Sights are getting where they should be...my part is where it's lacking at the moment. Been a long time since I have shot 1 hand pistol. I imagine as I keep at it the muscles used will make holding steadier for longer much easier. Those 3 outside the black were totally my fault, holding longer and should have put it down to re-aim instead of taking the shot. The trigger is gonna need some polishing etc inside as well whenever I have a chance to get to it.

Not bad at all! I’ll bet it won’t take long at all and you’ll be putting them all in the black. And then all in the 9 ring. I was so disappointed with my off hand shooting both with pistols and rifles that I stopped trying. But recently I’ve been working on it again and definitely improving a lot!

It’s amazing to see how steady the pro’s are shooting off hand, I really appreciate what it takes to get there. Thanks for sharing your group picture!

Great ! Thank you!

Glad to hear you are back at it! I am tracking my progress through the month to see if I can get some sort of tangible improvement. Same distance, height, target, ammo, and pistol. Saving the best target from each day that I don't do anything like make sight adjustments etc. so any error is directly me....unfortunately,lol. Am hoping to look back and see a progressively shrinking group size and better placement as things go on.

Pointed stick, you're welcome. For those one-handed shooters this is a good link (not bad advice for those using both hands).

Looks like some good articles there, thank you. Today's target, best of the 3 so far. 10 shots, first day using a translucent blinder over the non-dominant eye. Takes a little getting used to, but I think I am gonna like it. Maybe next I will try actually cleaning my glasses before shooting...might be a good idea. Still working on steadying up enough to shrink the group size before making any further sight adjustments, not bad for all things considered. That 1 little guy outside the black I fully intend to blame on it being 20 deg. here today.

I have a Gamo Compact match pistol similar to the Air Venturi.

What I did first was to try out all kinds of different pellets wad cutters hollow points domed pointed and shot them all from a very stable rest to choose the top 3 pellets that printed the tightest groups.

I really like the manageable cocking effort and relatively low noise when fired and of course the superb accuracy.

The balance and weight seems just about right. At first didn't appreciate the plastic but later grew on me. Still can't believe it's made by Gamo. Would be nice to figure a way to mount a red dot or at least fibre optic sights. Fun to plink with at 20 to 25 yards.

Addicting to shoot and don't want to stop it is that fun to shoot.

I like shooting it more than my P17 which is almost as accurate harder to cock and much louder in comparison but is probably the best bang for the buck.

@batman2, it was my understanding the Gamo compact was the same pistol with different branding. I am with ya on the addicting to shoot. The accuracy, and low noise are great in my close neighborhood. I am still very slowly picking away at some details, pressure points on the grip etc. Took care of the trigger work today, huge improvement, got it set at an average around 560g now. Smooth, light, and crisp at the end.

Probably the only downside to these pistols is the low velocity. I have found by removing the piston and putting two layers of metal duct tape on top of the piston then trimming it with a razor blade will add noticeably to the velocity. Did it to my P 17, Gamo Compact as well as the FAS604. Takes all of 5 minutes.

I wouldn't mind a little extra velocity, was figuring to go with a lighter pellet at some point. Currently shooting 7.4gr. Econ IIs. Any chance you got some some chrony numbers before and after the piston tape? I ask because the shot to shot consistency is excellent right now even though it's not fast. Consistency is king for hunting paper...
