"100 yard MOA Constest". TOM CAT WON!

Hey guys. I didn't realize 1 inch (MOA) groups at 100 yards with an airgun were even a challenge. I though you could spend an extra $1000 on a gun like a Steyr or Red Wolf, and shoot 1/2 inch groups at that distance. You can't.

Shooting a 100 yard group under 1 inch will involve: (possibly NO wind), (a high end PCP, possibly modified even further), (a skilled shooter), (lots of practice and many attempts), (a solid rest), (sorted, weighed, washed, possibly custom made swagged ammo), (a fair bit of luck).

Now me and a couple of my AGN friends are doing a contest to see who can get the first MOA 1 inch group at 100 yard with any airgun. Any bore size, any air gun!

So here is the rules:

Post your groups here with a quarter or MOA marker.

Any gun powered by PCP, CO2, Spring, Helium, Nitrogen

Prize: Something gun related from my pile of stuff (to be determined), worth at least $100.

GOOD LUCK! -Nate @ Youtube's Airgun Channel

Here's a bunch of entries. Red Wolf .25, 100 yards, all 5 shot groups...

Happy Shooting!

Jimmy, you're so close!! I think you'll have that quarter real soon! Aim small, miss small, my friend.

Contrary to one of the OP's thoughts,, the pellets I used were only washed. No further sorting was performed to them. But many of the other thoughts do apply - high end PCP, great barrel (ART proto), "ok" shooter, cooperative winds, practice, and a solid rest. I believe I was using the FC-G2 when I shot those.

Happy grouping y'all!

Tom

.22 EDgun R3 Long shooting .22 cal JSB RD Monsters at 925 FPS. Center to center same size as quarter. I think this was a 6 shot group. Distance was 100 yards. Breezy but wind directly in my face... Pellets straight from the tin. I was aiming at the small through hole just under the group. Rusty steel plate for target. Front bipod, small V-bag for rear rest. This is the same gun I finished third with at the recent Western National Long Range Airgun Championship in Temecula, CA.

This is the best group I have been able to put together so far. It was shot late last year with my .25 taipan veteran. I haven't been able to recreate it but I have been close.

(Don't pay attention to the numbers on the calipers.. they were wrong and I didn't realize it.)

All are 5 shot groups and shot between 101 yards and 105 yards.

I tried my luck today. Windy as heck, but tried anyway.

Had a 0.83" inch group going with 4 shots and blew it out to 1.63" with the fifth shot. Then I got progressively worse the more I tried? LOL

.22 Cricket pup with 20x SWFA this group was shot with the 18.1 gr jsb's. They were doing better than the 25 gr today for some reason?

Once I adjusted for the wind to get my groups closer to bullseye, everything went to crap for me. Groups from 1.5" to 2" and some even worse. Maybe I'll get a calm windless day soon?

Nate, sorry about all your headaches with the "Neg Heads". Would be nice if they had to sign their name to it when they give a negative?

I can't get into AGW. Maybe take a break from us and try your luck back here at a later date. I'll catch ya on the tube etc.

@kaylaindy - If you were looking for the "first" one to post a 1"@100y group then, yes, I think I got it. I thought you were going to pick one at random. All my groups are 5 shots each. Some are very hard to tell since they are on a metal plate. I look for the silver halo that the pellet leaves behind. Without calipers, I'd say my smallest CTC is about 3/4".

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I never had any issues with you bud. Good luck!

Tom

Yeah, Tom. I agree, you sort of nailed it. The prize was for the first one to do a group under 1 inch...but I have a feeling if you had to do it actually today, that would just be a technicality. Since a bunch of people have made the goal then you are the FIRST one. Let me see what I got for prizes. Either a bad ass $100 air rifle (I got alot of those new in the boxes), or I also have alot of bi-pods (I forgot your already the bi-pod king), I got overpowered green lasers that work great. Some $50 scopes, an autographed picture of that Airgun Channel guy, some used targets, probably some cool stuff. I'll post a list to choose from tomorrow.

TOMCAT WON!!

Everyone else who had 1 inch groups also tied for first place (but you don't get a prize).

Slightly tweeked contest of the same variety coming soon! Unless someone else wants to start again. No prizes necessary!

P.S. I worked my troubles out. Thanks Tom!

@Campfussell - I had to laugh when I read that line under the last pic. Re-phrased - "Once I got close to hitting the bullseye, everything went to crap!" XD LOL

I imagine many of us have had a day like that. I'm hoping to get some calm days too. Colorado's got a snow storm headed in tonight. I've seen expected totals over 10" in some areas!

Fussel, I worked that out. I love AGN again. You totally got 5 shots in 1 inch! Freakin awesome. Throwing a contest is harder than I thought. I forgot I would have to judge it too. That's hard. Next contest will have a set time like 30 days and then we can say the tightest group wins, and also the most shots inside MOA. I think you definitely beat me..but I just have to shoot a 100 yard group to confirm. It would be my first attempt...ever. So that would be crazy if I could do it. Probably won't happen though. -Nate

Define how many makes up a group? I don't see this in your post above. I can shoot a group of 1 at 100 yards all day long under an inch.

Darn it, I forgot that part. It was 5 shots...sorry guys, this was my first contest! Next contest I'll have the rules down..and we can go for a couple weeks with an award for the tightest group....and the most shots under 1 inch with no misses.
