I just purchased a .177 Zan Pellet Sizer. It's more of a pellet down sizer since you can't make the pellet head or skirt larger. It's also easy to use to check pellet head and skirt diameters saving you from purchasing addition measuring equipment. It consists of 5 magnetic skirt sizing plates, 5 magnetic head sizing plates, fixture, and push tool. The magnets hold very strongly to each other and require the push tool to separate the plates for me. You may have more strength than me. The provided case looks like a Pelican case at first but is a thin imposter. I ended up purchasing a $1.78 bead container from Wally World to keep the plates separated and organized.
Shooting session conditions:
Crosman Challenger 2021S modified by Airgun Revisions to accept Marauder Magazine
Daisy Wadcutters (sorted to 7.54 grain)
Winchester Domed (sorted to 7.74 grain)
Benchrest at 10 meters
No wind to speak of
5 shots on each 1/2" bullseye
This is my new retirement hobby (shooting less than 6 months). I never shot anything since I was a kid, and I had a BB gun. Take my opinions and observations into account with the fact I have very little shooting experience, and I may be speaking out of my ass. I was curious if this device could make cheap pellets perform better. The Daisy wadcutters and Winchester domes are only $4.50 / $5.40 for 500 pellets from Daisy online.
Observations:
The Daisy and Winchester pellets are "fat" (larger than the biggest head plate size of 4.53") in comparison to Excite Plinking pellets (4.50 head size).
I first sized the pellets to the closest original size and then 1 skirt and 1 head size down for this session. I did not Chrono my shots, but my Challenger usually shoots the Daisy wadcutters at 580fps. It seems to prefer the Winchester sized closer to its original size and the Daisy at one size down. The center target is Winchester 4.72 - 4.53. This is a very small sample size, but sizing pellets seem to
show improvement in my use case.
Questions:
Does a choked barrel affect skirt size less?
Can cheap sized pellets be as accurate as more expensive pellets straight out of the tin?
How resized pellets perform under more normal speeds of 850-900 fps?
