Yellow Gray squirrel?

So I’m aware

there are fox squirrels in existence, though none within 50 miles of here that I’ve ever seen. The tail looks like a gray, but it’s belly is yellow. Why could that be?

I’m in the southeastern US and in my area we have only gray squirrels. I have shot hundreds at a local pecan orchard and I’ve seen a few with the yellow belly. One or two with a pronounced series of rings on the tail also, similar to a raccoon.

Could be from lichen's on the tree bark it's like a fungus or moss . Like elk when they rub their velvet off on alder trees they have kind of a orange tint to them ( at least to my eyes I'm colored blind lol) other words stain from tree bark

It's from them eating black walnuts. You can smell the black walnuts coming off of them.

This makes sense. It would also explain the extremely black front paws and around the nose and mouth.

It's jaundice. Probably an alcoholic.

Makes sense. I shot it off a walnut tree.

I too have shot squirrels with yellow , orange bellies . I was thinking they may have been a hybrid between greys and fox squirrels but now it makes more sense it is from the walnuts. I have many walnut trees on my property and they draw squirrels like a magnet in the fall.

And the black paws, mouth and nose are from the cigars. LOL!

Could be a smoker. I just got another classic grey 10 minutes ago. Sitting on my bird feeder. Looking directly at me. Jsb in 177 between the eyes at 25 yards from the 97k. Rolled straight over dead. Love a accurate gun!
