Woodchuck Hit analysis

I agree it was hit lower. I've played with the raw video, adjusting contrast and such, also looking at each frame (120fps) and can see the slug coming down to the left of the spine and rearward of the shoulder.

I did move some rocks to try and find him but couldn't budge the boulders. I hope to get back there in a week or two and check on him as well as two other woodchucks I saw.

My guess is he’ll be out of the hospital and the flowers you sent aren’t going to make him one bit happier to see you.

Hope you get another chance or at least can pay your respects.

I’ll be interested in what you find on that one

Great shot Bob, they are a tough beast to plant for sure but that one took a dirt nap. Shock wave tells it all, if you just skinned him you wouldn't see that kind of muscle response. Great shot!

This is getting to be a bit silly. Only way anyone will know is if Bob gets back to the hole. None of myself included can make certain statements about what happened based on that video. Muscle response? Something flew off the back I think it was dust. If it was a deeper hit it could be blood or tissue. He is/was a fat one and he twitched some in response no one knows anymore then that. Seems more logical that he was reacting to being “stung” then hit hard. Sides seem to being taken for the sake of friendship or approval . I’m curious beyond that I don’t care. It’s not personal or at least it’s not for me.

I have a VET friend that killed one and couldn’t find a mark on him. I’ve had that happen. I said to him “ya have an x-ray machine don’t ya” He x-rayed the GH and found bullet fragments inside the hog. From that we concluded that it was a low miss that likely hit a rock sending fragments into the animal. That is a reasonable assumption. We can’t make any reasonable assumptions about this situation

That was a very nice shot if you were using at least a .22 mag. Too bad your gun only has the energy of a slingshot at that distance. Ethical? Probably not. Nice shooting with an airgun? Definitely yes.

Must be a very powerful slingshot then. I estimate about 50 fpe left at 150 yards. Bill

Groundhogs can take 865fpe at 150yrds from a .223 and still run off. Airguns are laughable in comparison.

I have killed hundreds of groundhogs with rimfires, centerfires and air rifles and they are tuff critters. I have blown them in half and watched them crawl back to their hole. My point was to call the 50 fpe left a slingshot is ridiculous too. I too would rather put a head shot on an adult groundhog with an air rifle but with 50 fpe to the chest region that groundhog was not going to last too long. Bill

I understand but the point I was trying to make is no powder burning groundhog hunter would ever hunt groundhogs at 150yrds with a subsonic 40gr bullet. I have also shot too many groundhogs to count but even when using a .22lr with a 40gr going 1,100fps, 150yrds is a no go. I would just like to say that I am no saint when it come to long shots or pushing the limits of a chosen weapon. But here is the issue. When you are shooting animals at the extreme effective range of an airgun, pistol, rifle or bow, sometimes its only a matter of an inch or two that can make you a hero or unethical. Had that groundhog got away with the OP's chosen weapon at 50yrds, all we would be talking about is how did you miss its head. 147yrds with an airgun? Very easy to miss its head.
