It is full blown winter here in West Michigan and the shooting opportunities at my permissions are slim. I live close to Lake Michigan so we have a lot of cloud cover, snow and wind. There are a few starlings around but they are very wary. However, the pigeons are around but shots are hard to come by. Went out yesterday to reconnoiter and encountered a few pigeons roosting on silos. Managed to drop 4 and had a double. Used my .30 cal with 44 grain JSB’s and the birds were 65 yards away. Also, got one starling. There were lots of pigeons and crows feeding out in cut corn fields and I see a lot more pigeons than usual so they must have had a good year reproducing. I went back out again today with my .22 shooting JSB knockouts and dropped 3 more pigeons feeding in the cut corn at 84 yards. I got another double. Crows are not in season until February 1 but they can be taken if they are causing a nuisance. I noticed 4 crows trying to get in the chicken coop at one farm so that made them an eligible target and I dropped one. Also got two starlings. Been a fun couple days. Felt good to get out and even though the temps were in the teens, the wind was light so it was tolerable.
