Wildcat MKIII Sniper .25 - Performance & Accuracy (post-mods)

It's a pretty stiff turn.

Agree with Wimpanzee, on first its pretty stiff. It’s even sort of difficult to seat the allen wrench, at least mine was. But it all works and operates better over time. Also, a little known fact is you have to point your muzzle end down to turn the hammer spring tension wheel. If you point the muzzle upward the HST adjustment parts slide backwards (free-floating) making it mechanically impossible to turn the wheel. Easy remedy; point the muzzle slightly down or level and then turn the wheel and select your different 1 through 7 power setting.

Caution: Don’t try to force it..

Super thanks. It is all again about balance isn’t it

Basically applies to any power adjustable regulated PCP.

Nice job man! Thinking about getting one in .30 to tinker with soon (my Raptor sucks!)

Thanks! Never seen any dealers with the .30 calibers yet in stock, but I’m sure they’re on the way. Modded the way I have done my .25 MKIII, she’s gonna be wicked. I like the Wildcat platform. A simple, refined, and accurate bullpup, but now more versatile... Ticks all my boxes! ✅✅✅✅✅

It made a believer of me.

I got into the plenum cult when I had Lee545 install his 25 cal plenum in my Skyhawk, now that 22 hits 45 FPE with 22 Kings and made me a believer.

However I do have a dilemma, I can’t decide whether to buy the Dreamline Classic Walnut, a superior barrel and a couple plenums or the Wildcat III and aaadittional plenum, in either 25 or 30. Both good cast bullet calibers.

Any guess on FPE a 30 would put out at max? Is there a energy ceiling that the Dreamline would have compared to the Wildcat III?

Roachcreek

All that’s out there is this screenshot from FX’s website. I tuned up my .25 MKIII Sniper to just under 70 fpe, so the .30 MKIII Sniper is advertised for up to 85 fpe and I would assume that would be about peak energy.

I'm sure they can do over 100FPE with modifications.

The group at 100 yards with NSA 33 grain is excellent!!!

Thanks Emu!

Compliments are well and good and they are appreciated, but is the MKIII still worthy of them? While I was plinking today @ my 100 yard gongs. I thought, why don’t I show them again, take pictures, and make a post? Instead of just thanking Emu. I mean, what if it’s all a fluke?

I’ll explain each photo.

This gif was taken to illustrate the ammo used, which was the JSB King Heavy 33.95g pellets and Nielsen Specialty Ammo HP 33.5 g slugs. Both shot on max HST level #7 around 940 to 950 fps. Also, I made the below gif, to give some realism to the 100 yard shots, how far and how the wind was moving.

The smaller gong to the right was my sighter groups JSB’s on the left and NSA’s on the right. I usually holdover but this time around I decided to dial my Hawke FFP Sidewinder scope for the 100 yard shot groups ( the WC is normally zero’d @ 25 yards ). The single shots separated from the main groups were the first shot. Both projectile’s elevation dial was 1.5 mils up, but the NSA’s required a additional 0.5 mil windage dial to the left to be zero’d for 100 yards. This is why I power tune my FX airgun’s, the holdover would have been 3 or 4 mils at the factory settings. “Flat Trajectory!”

Now, for the official 5 shot 100 yard groups! Shot on the large gong on the left. I shot the NSA’s on the right first, and the first four hit near perfect and the last one I believe I scratched my nose (got off the gun) and it landed a little low to the right. The group to the left are the JSB’s. The Sniper MKIII unbelievably put the first 3 shots in the exact same spot!!! Then, in my typical amateur airgun shooting fashion I pulled the last 2 shots to the left.

No gun is perfect and no shooter is perfect. But, this one is pretty darn good!

So the slugs were pushed by the cross wind more?

No sir, the NSA slugs and the JSB pellets in this example don’t have the exact same POI or zero. The WC MKIII is zero’d for the JSB’s, not making any adjustments the NSA slugs will hit 0.5 mil to the right. So, when shooting the NSA’s with the WC Sniper if I want to be zero’d I just dial 5 clicks to the left. ( @ distances from 25 to 100 yards) It’s common, different projectiles don’t always have the same point of impact. Neither today, were affected much by the 10 mph cross wind. I held dead on.

And the JSB MKII have the same drop. So effectively the same BC as the slugs unless the pellets are faster out the muzzle for any given tune.

Haven’t calculated the a BC (doesn’t matter much to me). What matters to me is what is my aim point so I can successfully make the shot. The science of it isn’t my first priority, not discounting its importance though. I am more of a instinctive shooter rather than using extensive calculations. The most math I do is figuring out where to hold (distance & wind), about how fast the ammo is going. and how hard the ammo is hitting. Been hunting for 35 years before I ever even heard of the term Ballistic Co-efficienct. I don’t really always have the time for it in the field, usually just a small time window, so you just have to know the gun.

They both are close to the same weight (33.95g & 33.5g) and are traveling about the same speed 940 to 950fps. The slugs should have the better BC. All I know is the holdover for both @ 100 yards is 1.5 mils high.

Finally received my anxiously awaited SMWENGINEERING, FX Wildcat Barrel Clamp and Mount in the mail today all the way from the UK. Been tracking these things in the mail for nearly a month. Ordered June 2nd! (slow due to Corvid-19) It is my final bolt on accessory I wanted to add to my MKIII to wrap up all the modifications. Making the barrel rock solid! Got the barrel-band fitted and tweaked my zero of 25 yards today. Just wanted to share..

VERY nice 3D printing, impressive quality. And by the sound of your enthusiasm you are excited as well. Nice way to wrap up your spot-on MKIII. Eagerly awaiting your thoughts.

The last photo I would say has your MKIII having the pure essence of "Balance"

Enjoy.

Thanks Patriick,

It is of top quality, and the WC balances perfectly at the trigger guard. She’s a brick house!

Hi Joe,

i hope you can shed some light here.

today all of a sudden out of the blue the actuating rod that connects the trigger with the sear was disconnected on the bacaide of the wildcat. The trigger was lame and when I removed the stock I saw a tiny pin laying in the stock . Hat tiny pin was supposed to connect the the rod and the other part it connects to. I could allign the hole in both parts and just push in the pin again with no effort. Nothing holds the pin as it is not screwed or conical or any other security. I just put a slight dot of glue on both sides and hope it will not come out again. Is there anything wrong with my specific construction/ parts or is this the way it is made ?

thanks in advance
