Why do magazines for Daystste rifles cost so much?

They are expensive because the typical DayState is marketed towards a smaller more exclusive segment of owners who should in theory, be able to afford the price of their rifles and magazines. Is this fair to everyone? No. Then again, a capitalistic economy is not based on fairness or equality such as a socialistic economy. Do I think $120 is a bit much for a magazine? Yes. However, I was willing to accept the higher cost prior to making a decision to purchase a DayState.

Bottom line, DayState magazines are certainly not "cheap" but then again, they were never intended to be "cheap". DayState sells products that economists refer to as a Veblen goods. Veblen goods are characterized as having a negative price elasticity of demand: for example, making a perfume more expensive can increase its perceived value as a luxury good to such an extent that sales can go up, rather than down.

Well stated Travels

I might spring for a Daystate at some point but not while mags are $120 each. I don't like feeling like I have been taken advantage of, and that's exactly what they are doing. I understand FX has designed new mags for the Wildcat that are much more affordable than the Bobcat etc.

Wow! Great answers, based on real world knowledge. Daystate makes what is probably best described as a standard manufacturer's mark up, which from my knowledge is about the same as BSA/AirArms and somewhat less than FX. Development and those high grade blemish-free parts absorb huge amounts of money, while amortisation of set up cost can take years due to low volume production. As to the magazine, the cost is partially becase its clockwork design requires higher precision in manufacturer, when Daystate moved to the indexing pin system all the magazines had to be upgraded and consequentially cost more to make. However back in 2003 they retailed at £48.00 and today they are £52.00. Always hard to defend prices i know, but there it is. Don't forget our social system (that some of you would like) also means higher levels of personal and corporate taxation. Made in England costs.

"regsmeeton"Order from England. The price is about 50 pounds, even at 1.50 per pound that's only 75 dollars. Shipping is not too bad. I need to order a few spares myself. Damned if I will pay 120 bucks a pop.

Low Profile 10-Shot Magazine (Type IV) - Newest model with anodized black rotor and larger indexing arm.

Has anyone had any luck buying magazines from any of the above links ? I have tried the first 4 listed for about a week now. The first one Midland after adding to your cart and going to checkout said they were out of stock. Then the next day they price went up about 11 dollars? Drapers says out of stock I then tried Uttings they emailed me and said they couldnt ship to them the US, Maybe its a conspericy? haha

My daughter goes to school in UK, and we've visited quite a bit. Cost is about double for comparable goods, lodging, restaurants, compared to Southern California (which is already expensive). Everything has VAT added (close to 20%), and of course locals pay high income taxes as well. Lots of safety nets, in theory, but the bureaucracy is commensurate.

That said, UK is a lovely country with well educated people. As you depart for the US, at Heathrow you can queue and request a refund of VAT you paid whilst visiting. Just save your receipts!

One thing I see totally left out of this post is the cost of importing a item into the US or any other country .So a few facts .the cost of getting a product from the manufacturer to a customs broker to the purchaser in the US generally runs from 20 to 35 % of the purchase price Then there is a 3.9 % duty and there is a 11% excise tax on air rifles coming into the US .So the importer has a minimum cost increase of 34.9 % and more than likely closer to 50% paid for the product .Take away the 20% vat and prices are real close .This works in reverse for importers of US products .While checking some of the European dealers I saw a marauder for 1059 Euro .(about 1200 US dollars) Hope I have shed a little light on the price spread between England and the US cost of a Daystate product . And no I do not work for anyone in the air gun industry but do have some knowledge of the importing of products into the US .

Over priced?? I paid $100.00 less for my new Daystate MK4 IS then I did for my new FX Royale 400....I just bought a used Styer LG110ft for a couple hundred more then both these rifles.... It is all relative to what you want, I found a Daystate mag for the MK4 on the Yellow classifieds for $80.00 shipped, back in May. The Daystate mag is about the slickest around and is quality. My Evanix mag has to be indexed by a lever operated by the hammer/striker. I bought the gun broke as the bolt on the striker stripped and the head gouged out the side plate when indexing. I removed the bolt and lever and just finger the mag around. It give better accuracy doing so anyway.

The Daystate mag is slicker then my finger! If you buy a high quality rifle don't you put the best glass on top you can afford? When buying a PCP you need to research the accessories that are needed to see if the gun is plausible for your budget. Not saying that the Daystate mags are not pricey but you should know and accept that before you buy the rifle. I am not defending the prices Daystate charges, I AM defending all manufacturers to charge what they deem they need for their products. Styer, and other companies that sell products for Styers, charge a hell of a lot more for accessories then Daystate does. IMHO

We live in the USA and we are a country that believes in capitalism, free trade of goods, and the right to charge what you want for your goods and labors. It all boils down to, if you don't want to pay the price for something, it is your right not to buy it! Criticizing the manufacturers is not the way to go. Not buying the product is. The rule of supply and demand rules the manufacturing process i think. If the supply goes down then the manufacture has to find a way to get the demand back up. The thing is with a quality product there as people who want it and are willing to bite the bullet on price to get it.

No I am not rich..I bought three of these rifles with money from Roth withdraws after I retired. Otherwise I would be knee deep in Discos by now. I just want to give the manufacturer of our obsessions a fair shake. Remember they are in the business to make money, which a lot of it goes to research and tooling to make new and better guns that we will drool over when made. Oh yeah I have two Daystate magazines now for the gun and don't use either. I use the single shot tray for FT comps...So I guess the joke is on me. I should have researched the fact that the PCP rifles are generally more accurate with the SST then a mag.... Oh well.....

i agree when you can buy a top line remington 700 for less than 600 bucks then the fx daystate walther and all others are rediculously over priced a daystate regal with 2 magazines should be no more than 700 bucks in my opinion and my opinion doesnt mean crap because yall and the english keep paying their price if no body bought a daystate and sent them letters complaining about the price for 6 months i bet the cost would drop by 40 percent we are the idiots that control the price by our buying habbits
