Why attend a World Field Target Championship?

Why attend a World Field Target Championship? I've heard that so many times over the years. As many of you know, we were fortunate to have hosted the event here at home last year, and many of you likely experienced what was probably the largest field target event in US history. Since then, we have seen a resurgence in interest in attending the world's top-tier field target event. This year it was held in Northern Ireland. The US ultimately sent a group of 18 competitors to attend this incredible venue. The competition was steep and challenging for all. Several rose to the surface and showed the world how it was done. That aside, and certainly not to minimize it, the challenges to get there and back were some of the most difficult traveling experiences seen in a while for those who travel often to compete. So, why do it? Well, every experience traveling to an event builds incredible life memories that you wouldn't have had otherwise. Even the matches that could use some severe improvements still share much more than the match in the memory banks, looking back. There are folks who are content with just showing up at their local range and plinking for a few hours, and that's perfectly ok. But the moment you decide to pack your rifle and attend a match outside your comfort zone is where it all begins. Whether it's a GP, or a Nats, or any of the biggies. It's not only about the match itself, it's about all the experiences that come with it. It comes with sharing experiences with others and making new friends. Yeah, that sounds cliché. For sure... BUT it's true! You will find yourself experiencing new locations that may not be on the top of your vacation list. And THAT'S what makes it special. Field Target will take you to unique locations, whether it's a big city, a small city, or a country 18 hours away by plane. It's the drinks you share, the bread you break, the deep conversations of the sport you love. Travel is all about discovery, we know that. But traveling for FT forces the discovery of places and people that may not be on the radar. You may find a new technique, a new piece of gear, or even come home with a new hat or shirt you traded for. The thought of spending a significant amount of money to shoot a match may seem foolish to some. However, I look back at events, and there is always something that you can draw from. Yes, to some, the logistics seem overwhelming and frustrating at times. But in the end, it is always worth it. Even the places you wouldn't go back to, it gives you the knowledge of why and what not to do, and something to talk over drinks with at your next experience.
So I asked why, but I also know it's twice as easy to give a reason why not to go. I'll always encourage you to take that first step... Do a GP, then do a Nats, and finally do a WFTC.
This year, I took my family with me to Ireland, a couple of years back, to South Africa for the Championship, and I cherish these core memories for myself and my family. It wasn't easy. The laughter, the hugs, the look of discovery, and awe. The great people you meet along the way. The adventure. Isn't this what life's about? This post aims to share with you all that this sport has to offer. It's not all about one thing. It's the entirety of the experience, and it's worth every penny. There's a reason competitors keep coming back for the next one after they've done it. Ask anyone who's just returned.

Cheers

Garrett
