who's a dang good boy....him is!

hes a year old GSD of pure lineage, half working lines and half show lines.

first time at the farm and first time seeing a game animal bigger than a cotton tail or opossum. absolutely no real tracking experience...

we hopped out of the truck and he spotted a 5-7 year 12 point buck by the cattle pen, he made the 20-30 yards to the pen, lifted his right leg and curled his tail up letting out a soft and quiet "bork" to get my attention.

he was 10ft away with the buck staring him down, and 2 hefty does stood up and spooked him. he jumped back for a second and they took off through the trees headed west.

i told him "get em, find em" and he instantly put his nose to the bedded spots they were in and first set of print. then took off with a 20 yard lead on me.

he tracked them through 2 groves of trees and came up on them as they jumped the property line fence a 1/2 mile from the point of engagement.

he once again pointed and let out a prominent bark without looking away.

when I got to him 30 seconds later I could see all 3 50 yards into the neighbors pasture.

needless to say hes an amazing boy, I see many small game and prairie cornerings/trophys in his future.

he truly is an amazing boy. he would literally tear some one apart if he thought they were a threat to my wife or son, will not let a stranger get between them and him. raises his hair and doesnt take his eyes off them and maintains himself as a barrier.

but at the same time, he is the cuddliest boy ever! even let's our cousins husky of the same age, eat his food...from his bowl, play with his toys and romp around occasionally knocking him down even though hes 1/3 bigger at least.

I grew up with a malimute-yellow lab mix. he passed at 17. he was an great dog, my best friend. I had hoped Loki would be similar, he is and so much more! I'm glad we chose a GSD.

his personality is out of control, he isnt merely a pet. hes my sons brother, my right hand man and the protector of our family. hes a funny boy, cuddly, the borky-est there is lol.

it's so amazing how his alsatian instincts take over and how honed he is, without himself even knowing. this is a side of him weve never seen before and it has apparently awakened something in him.

hes never really tried to get a cotton tail before, just tried to see what they were about and probably say "hey fuzzy guy, you want to do the plays?".

but the thrill of tracking the deer and intensity of the initial chase must have got to him....because when I let him outside tonight, I could tell something was up.

I opened the back door and rather than his usual being pokey in the enclosed porch, he went straight for the dog door.

so I followed, low and behold he was after a cotton tail by the back fence. he was on it so fast, it went into a panic and didnt have a chance to squeeze through the fence board they busted to get through, making the cotton tail do a wide sweep through the center of the yard towards the trampoline and side fence where they made another fence hole.

Loki was on its heels the entire time! could have lunged and had it. it was so afraid, i heard the smack of the fence board as it banged the side of the hole because it couldnt slow down. hahahaha

we are definitely going to do some extensive hunting/tracking training from now on. as a pup we only did obedience, tricks, agility and eventually light retrieving once noticing a odd niche for it. at some point around 6-8 months he naturally started indicating on his own, which I thought was weird as i never knew GSDs to "point" like a pointer or retriever. I'm so glad we were diligent with his agility once his body was ready.

I think the 1/4 law-military service, 1/4 farm-herd and 1/2 show lineage bloodlines are a perfect combo. we have his extensive lineage for 8 generations back.

his compilation of bloodlines makes for an extremely well rounded and adaptive GSD.
