Back when I was powder fire shooting almost every weekend,, depending on which group of people it was, three of us normally went to a canyon that was almost fully surrounded by mountain side, with a smallish area where you drove in. It wasn't a very large area, so if you were the first there, you could park the car, truck so no one else could get in. This "was" a mostly friendly arrangement by the three or four car loads of folks that shot there, mostly because it was a small area. I do have one "stand-off" story too !

Anyway, someone had drug a piece of 3/4" steel plate up the hillside for everyone to shoot at. On any given weekend, it could be about 75/80 yards away, sometimes it could be 150 or more yards away, up one of the hills. We never figured out how it got moved, or even got put there, it was heavy !

One of those "long distance" days, I had my little Berretta, M-70 (.22) with me. Once I figured out the hold-over, you could pull the trigger, and then count to 4 or 5 before you heard the "tink" of the bullet hitting the plate. We all found shooting that plate with smaller calibers and pistols more fun than with rifles or larger calibers because of the time it took the bullet to get there, and the sometimes "massive" hold-over that we had to use to even hit it.

So yeah, hitting steel was a great time.

This is called the Punisher. You have to shoot through a .30 cal hole to hit the red paddle in back. If you miss, the star and paddle go down. Forget most shooters....most guns cannot make it through all 6 stars at any distance! Hence the name. From up to 500 yards away, just hit the button on the remote, and the targets reset. No strings attatched!

I paid $699.00 for this with shipping. Do you think I got ripped off? Be honest please. It's supposed to stand up to magnum .30 cals. ...yes, it works flawlessly. Also, the remote and hydralic actuator can be replaced should they ever go out for just $20 and $30 respectively.

.30 cal? In airguns and firearms as well? Is it made out of AR500 or 550? It looks pretty cool for airguns especially. Kind of reminds me of what biatholon skiers shoot at. If you miss low with a firearm, the electronics looks like they could be hit.

The electronics are protected by steel once it's set up. There is a guard in front of where they go. Anything that can get shot such as the cable and hydralics, are protected by steel plates facing the shooter. It's not AR500 but it is 1/4 inch steel and the stars are 3/8 inch. It should handle.22 rimfire just fine....no big caliber firearms though. It's only about 2.5 feet long.

....I know it "looks pretty cool". ...but does anyone want to give their opinion if it's worth $699.00? I definately couldn't find anything comparable for sale. Thanks by the way Mr. H! That target is the pride of my colletion. (I probably have 100 targets I never shot). I'm kind of a hoarder when it comes to steel targets.

I could sell just these 7 targets and buy a brand new Red Wolf, and a scope!

Politicly incorrect target:

5 years of checking eBay every 24 hours: I have not missed a day in 5 years.

missed this one by 5 hours. The seller offered $500. I waited a day..it sold for $750...really, this monkey has no price. You could sell it for $5000 easily. That just happened last month. It was rough!

If you like shooting steel targets like that, you should find and join your local field target club. It's a lot of fun.

You'll need an accurate .177 or .20 gun, preferably sub-12 FPE. There are several different classes, but the courses are usually set up in the woods and you have to be an expert at doping the wind and knowing your trajectory. You can get a match-grade gun and scope and spend thousands or just a quality springer and just spend maybe $1500 to get going.

Not a lot of the field target shooters post here; they don't tend to be the internet forum-type.

My club has a lot of camaraderie, and we cook out on the match days.
