Who do I trust?

Both chronographs running in parallel. Prophet Performance 2 in .22 with a LR barrel. Regulator set to 80 bar. Hammer spring 1/4 turn past lowest amount of tension to open the valve. Ammo of choice is the JSB 15.89gr. Caldwell Chronograph was 18” from the muzzle, FX was mounted to the moderator.
FX Chronograph: 930 fps
Caldwell Ballistic Chronograph: 970 fps
Who do I trust? I don’t know what to believe now. Ugh!

I used to keep a bone stock crosman 2240 as a reference gun. Load a co2 cart and shoot 14.3 pellets over it. Always in the 450-460 fps range im my basement, just like stated from manufacturer.

Had to stop keeping those guns around because I always ended up modifying them.

Before you get rid of either of them you should make sure you are shooting like for like in Ammo weight. Yes, that means to sort for weight. I just finished sorting 1500 of the jsb 33.95 MK2 Heavy’s, and weights went from the lightest at 33.5g all the way to the heaviest at 35.0g. I try to target the batches of 33.9-34, the 34.1-34.2, and the 34.3-34.4 as keepers, the rest become plinking Ammo for when friends come over and want to shoot my guns.

With that said, if I go from a 33.9 tin to a new tin batch and shoot a 34.4, that’s easily a 16-20 FPS difference, and that’s even including idiosyncrasies that come with chronographs.
How do you know you weren’t shooting a 33.5g on one shot and a 35g on the next, as an example if using these pellets?

Just food for thought

I wouldn't sweat it too much. I do have a Caldwell and am happy with it.

It would be really nice to have a primary standard to work from in order to gage accuracy and standard deviation for a given chrono. Gravity is constant, so that should work for us. Perhaps a BB dropped from a certain height through the chronograph... It would be accelerating at a known rate and should be predictable. I'll look into setting up a test that we can do if we want.

I did enjoy the video. The guy addressed internet randos in commanding fashion as well as providing solid info.
