Which Texan?

Hey All

I am considering adding an AirForce Texan to my collection. Only problem is that I don’t know which caliber is best. 308, 357 or 45.

It will mainly be for target shooting and maybe an occasional Deer. (All 3 will be hunt legal for me). I have plenty of Lee molds for all 3 calibers, (I’m a long time caster and reloader with an extensive mold selection), and plan on buying some bullets as well. If quality bullets are available I will likely buy the majority of my rounds.

Any suggestions?

The only deer hunting I would be doing is up here in the great white north (Canada).

I’m actually from Newfoundland where there isn’t any medium-big game that would be suitable for an air rifle. I do moose hunt, but there aren’t any air rifles that I could ethically hunt our giant moose with. (Think HUGE moose that are more suited for 500 grain 45-70 rounds.)

I’m going to go out on a limb and say you probably own more .45 molds than .35 or .30 cal(?) Can’t go wrong with a .35 or .45 Texan. Mines a .45. I’ve shot a bunch of “store bought” bullets that performed so-so. One nice thing about a .45 Texan is they shoot .457 round ball reeeally well (300 fpe, great accuracy out to 50-60 yards) and those are relatively cheap. For shooting serious distance, there are more and more “boutique” bullets out there that are amazingly accurate beyond 100 yards. Almost the same for .35 cal, and not so much for .30 I think.

Hope this is green + sign worthy, haha. Good luck!

You are 100% right. I have loads of 45 molds and access to lots more through friends.

Thanks for for the input.
