Which pellet caliber is best overall for backyard plinking/target shooting?

I would say it would be based on the size of your backyard / backstop, berm and how close your neighbors are… That said, I like plinking with my .22 PCPs…

L.Leon is right , just wanted to ad for backyard Don't shoot steel , or wood shoot something much softer like stacks of cardboard , or rubber mulch. These are safer , and quiet compared to steel. As long as the airgun is quiet , and if not add a moderator ( silencer).
Then it's ok for any caliber. Your very lucky that pellet hit your neighbors truck instead of your face. Get rid of the steel.

.177 is typically enough, but if I go to my buddies house with trees in the back yard..... the .25 gets to come out and play.

For your purposes, 177 or 22. Same cost. I’d favor 22 with more versatility. But that’s me. Good luck.

I prefer a .22 caliber, 30ish fpe PCP for most of my shooting.
If shooting a springer, I go for .177.
If shooting a springer, I go for .177.
