which hw springer should I get??

@Greenarrow

That’s a very nice gun up there. Is that a 95? Sleeved?

Both my Walthers are very accurate at 30 yards less than 1/2” groups. However, it has been the .177, not the .22 that has been more successful at actual humane kills at 20-30 yards. Don’t know why, it’s just been my experience.

Unfortunately I don’t do much hunting/pesting beyond 35 yards. However, if you look on YouTube there’s rabbit being taken at 60 yards sometimes with 12fpe .177 in the UK, routinely.

Hey Christian, that top rifle is a.22 R9 with a chopped barrel and a steel sleeve for looks. I made that stock myself out of a walnut blank.

The second picture top rifle is a.177 95 with Williams peep and the bottom rifle is the old style HW77K.

Bottom picture top rifle is what I call a HWR95. Its a . 177 95 action in the original stock that the R9 (very top rifle) came in. Bottom rifle is the HW97K in .177.

If I had the money I would go the way cea1960 is suggesting but alas I don’t. I own a Hw77 stainless fac rated and it’s very accurate. This is a video of it shooting pingpong balls at 61 metres.

Its a bit on the heavy side but it doesn’t seem to bother me when hunting. At the moment I’m useing H&N Barracuda Greens in 12.56 grain. Dispatching sparrows, minor birds at 50 metres is not a problem with this rifle and these pellets but I use the heavier FTT ‘s 14.65 grain when looking for a rabbit for the pot.

I have found that after deciding on the rifle actually going to a gun shop that has that particular rifle and see if it feels good in my hands like weight, cheek weld etc. before handing over my hard earned pensioner dollars works best for me.

Good luck.

Gary

97k!

One nice feature of a break barrel or the HW97K for hunting is that you can load a pellet, then uncock the gun until game appears. The guns with the anti-beartrap feature like the TX200 MkIII or Walther LGU make that very difficult. I suppose that is the main reason my R9/HW95 is usually my first choice for hunting.

If I didn't already have a TX200HC and was looking for a springer specifically for hunting, I would go for the HW97K in the laminated stock. I can shoot the heavier guns better and with more confidence.

I try to be as unbiased as I can when offering advice on a question being posted. That's not to say I am not biased, I am. Here is my personal thread on my LGV Master Pro in .177. One thing I will say even if you do not look through it or like the gun is: Because of it's positive locking mechanism, it's the closest thing you will get to a fixed barrel (hw97) in a break barrel. It is truly a wonderful gun, very accurate and freaking deadly.

As for opinions, you know what they say about those. Read an learn as much as you can. Go out and see if you can shoot some guns that you don't have to buy. Form your own opinions and learn from your mistakes and success. No platform is inferior to the other if you know what you want, how to use it, how to play it like a fiddle.

I prefer Springs because they are easy to work on, easy to tune, easy to get parts for, etc. Find your own way. When getting answers to advice request, look for a common theme.

Good luck in your search, and remember: As long as you buy a quality gun, you can always sell it for a bit less than you paid for it and move on to the next adventure, and just enjoy the ride.

... 5mm / .20 caliber beeman r9 or hw 95 .... hands down - especially for foot patrol ... easy lethal range of 45 yards with the vortek pg2 high output kit , which translates these from 720-ish fps with 11.42 grain ftt pellets to 800+ fps .. r1 and underlevers are big and heavy , model 35e is longer (20" barrel on the older ones) and youd be good to get 700 fps in .22 with power tune kit.... same .20 r9 goldfinger i had with vortek kit got 745 fps with the 14.66 grain 5.5mm pellets (but not near the range)... i might even go with the hw95 field pro combo (scoped, silenced squirrel sniper) , as intenseaty22 mentioned... but i found this one on gunbroker for $250 shipped - bidding started at $250 + shipping , but no one bid on it... i asked if i could just buy it (i always forget to watch the auctions close) .... it's in perfect shape - other than not having the box...

...... i'd be really tempted for that hw35e in stainless walnut in .22 , tho -- they're on sale pretty well now.. macarri mentioned getting 17 ftlbs because they have a larger diameter tube , like an r1 or hw90.... but these walnut / silver ones have charmed me for years (kinda like a well-kept sexy walnut / nickle sheridan silver streak does)... they were about $775 when i started admiring them : https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/spring-piston/weihrauch-hw35e-walnut-stainless-look-.22/ .... but these are my opinions and preferences after years of wanting only magnum air rifles.... maybe that helps. - paul .
