which hw springer should I get??

For $600 I would give a hard look at an HW95. I don’t actually have one (yet) but have done a lot of reading and sounds like a great fit for your needs. I like the Field Pro model from AoA: https://www.airgunsofarizona.com/spring-piston/weihrauch-hw95l-field-pro/

If weight is not a problem, check out the Walther LGV or LGU, as well as the TX200 or HW97. I own 2 LGVs, very accurate, but heavy.

HW80/R1 .22 caliber

HW95/R9 .22 caliber

50 yards is going to be a stretch for these spring guns. The guns will do it, it’s the shooter that needs to be “on”. The 80/R1 will have more OOMPH to it but both are worthy. In my experience, the .22 caliber HW barrels tend to favor the H&N FTTs in the larger head sizes like 5.53, 5.54 the best for accuracy

Thanks for all the feed back I’ve been looking at the hw 35 and the 97 the most.

You’ll find lots of happy owners of both the hw35 and the hw97. My hw97k in .177 is my favorite springer by a wide margin. A bit heavy, but not a problem if you get a good sling. Personally, I’m not a fan of the larger 30mm compression chamber on the hw35 (also found on the R1) as I feel it makes for a harsher shot cycle.

Good luck choosing.

Yep, the hw95 is an excellent choice. Buying from Krale is a good experience and their prices are excellent. Personally I prefer .177, but many seem to be happy with the hw95 in .22 too.

I prefer the .177 also. Realistically for me, I wouldn’t feel comfortable going longer than 40ish yards on a live target with a spring gun. That’s just me. The .22s hold a little more energy at distance, that is I why I suggested .22. If the average distance to target was in that 30-40 yard range, I would go .177. My .177 HW95s (2 of them) both prefer the AA 8.4 for accuracy. Many report that the boxed Crosman CPLs do very well in them also (.177). I have yet to try any of the boxed Crosman pellets but the ones in the round tins have never shown any promising results for me.

Just to get the flames fanned....

@Greenarrow

That’s a very nice gun up there. Is that a 95? Sleeved?

Both my Walthers are very accurate at 30 yards less than 1/2” groups. However, it has been the .177, not the .22 that has been more successful at actual humane kills at 20-30 yards. Don’t know why, it’s just been my experience.

Unfortunately I don’t do much hunting/pesting beyond 35 yards. However, if you look on YouTube there’s rabbit being taken at 60 yards sometimes with 12fpe .177 in the UK, routinely.

Ok here is my opinion.

The 95 in 177cal. To me its the best of all worlds. Reason being say hunting...a 177 will put down any small game. Some people will say raccoons are to large or whatever and groundhogs are too tough. Yes coons are large and hogs are tough. Shot placement is key of course. Yes your kill zone grows larger when going to a larger caliber but if you're good, accurate and cognizant of these things then its no problem. Plus you can always change calibers via barrel swap. It's easy to work on. Its a blend of the HW50 and the 98. Light, field target capable and it keeps value.

Of course you can get a heavy as all heck 90 or a small low power but accurate 30 but to me they are limited. Meaning the 90 is a big gun. Heavy and if full power it will get you tired of cocking it. The 30 is nice but its range is limited by its power output. So there you have it. Oh yeah the 95 has open sights so no need to wait for a scope

I have most of those rifles, some are better for some things than others, butt for what you say =break barrel, not under barrel because I think it is easier to load for that faster second shoot,I will Always go with a .22 rather than a .177 if I can because I have big fingers.

I love my R9,it is a .20 cal.I love that cal. too, butt advise against getting it because of pellet selection.

Yea a R9 is the way to go,not hard to cock, accurate in any cal.fits me good ,not heavy and soooo many after market parts for it.

Just my experience .
