Which Air Rifle?

Hi, new member here. I had an air rifle in my youth a Dianna 177, barely break an eggshell at 25 yards. I am looking to get a gun for general plinking and pest control, should the need arrise. It needs tp be quiet. My budget is around $200. It does not have to have a scope. As most supplied scopes are viewed with derision.

My first choice was the Hatsan 95 QE 0.22. This has a gas piston and watching a few u tube videos seems to fill all my criteria. However I am now reading that the gas piston is no better than a springer and not that much quieter. Also I have read that Hatsan after sales service is not the best.

So I need a quiet backyard friendly gun that is reliable, accurate and all for $200. Is this doable?

Cheers

Welcome!

First, what are your range needs? If short, then I've been told that CO2 cartridge air guns can make the kill for short range pesting. And, it's very quiet!

The longer range for which you need accuracy, may push up the cost of the gun ($200s to 600s OR more), along with the weight (8-11 lbs scoped).

I've got three springers (2 gas and one spring). My wife (has the better hearing) says the Gamo is the quietest and the Crosman Summit Ranger, the loudest. One neighbor never hears me; well, a different one directly behind me does!

Got my Gamo for just under $200 (quieter but not quiet); got my Summit Ranger for just over $100 (not quiet at all). From everything that I've read on the forums, you will have to buy a PCP for the ultimate quiet air gun; but that's not a possible $200 purchase. I've got a more expensive HW97K that's quieter than the Crosman (about equal with the Gamo)--(and that's still not silent) that shoots with fantastic accuracy; it's just a much heavier gun for me to shoot off-hand.

So, the ultimate answer to your question is, it sorta depends....

Walther Terrus AOA US$149 Accurate German quality...177...

Indeed! This is my newest rifle, and would be my recommendation for certain! I also have high regard for the RWS/Diana 34, however, that's only based upon what I've learned from others. The Terrus I have personal experience with. I scoped mine with a Bug Buster, and combined they are a very efficient, economical team. There's just no reason to go out and spend big bucks for high quality...despite the well meaning urging of others! Once OP learns his first rifle, and decides to continue with the hobby, THAT's the time to go for the premium quality rifles, in my opinion. The Terrus actually has many...or most...of the qualities of the high-buck rifles, with the fit being pretty much equal, but the finish ain't as good, maybe. But...for a rifle that you use everyday, and care for, it's just an outstanding gun!

I bought mine from Amazon, but it did cost more, however, I received it two days later. I ordered an HW97K from AoA early yesterday morning, and it still hasn't shipped...and there's a question...big question...in my mind as to whether its actually in stock now, so I'll be following up on that. I've made two orders from AoA, and I'm so far not overly impressed with their speed of customer service. That may change, but OP, just be aware my what I'm saying if you order from them. It might be worth a little extra money for dependable and quick turnaround! Up to you!

Don't do it. Walk away while you can. Started out as a crosman 2100 for $60 at Walmart. Then Benjamin Marauder rifle $480 with $170 hand pump. Then Marauder pistol $350. And up to fx impact $2000. Mtc scope for $650. Needed a compressor to fill my guns with air so got a $1300 hatsan lighting compressor and $500 cf tank. Daytime use was ok, but wanted night time shooting too. Got $200 night vision range finder, $400 night vision scope. Not even included the amount of ammo and accessories.

AOA has the Weihrauch HW30'S on sale in their previous owned section (the guns are brand new though) in the silver stainless finish for 250.oo German quality, 10 meter gun accurate, backyard friendly and will stop most anything that you don't want in your yard out to 30 yards. You don't have to take my word though do a search on ANY airgun forum or youtube HW30. Best 250. you can spend on an air rifle.

"Quiet" most of the time, comes with a price attached to it. if you really want quiet, the Benjamin Marauder comes from the factory as quiet as any of them that are 'moderated'.

my 25 Marauder is so quiet all I hear is the sound of the pellet impacting the target. but as pointed out by others here, the $$$$ WILL accelerate very quickly when a PCP is purchased.

the Marauder, like many other PCP's, is adjustable power-wise and can be tuned to be very "Back yard friendly". my son has a 22 Marauder and uses it to keep the rat population in a drainage ditch near his back yard in check and he lives in a housing tract in a SoCal metropolis. (he did check with local ordinances and found it was NOT illegal to discharge a pellet gun within city boundaries, though) .

often times, the noise from the action of a springer is more than the report of the muzzle is. last. but not least, normally, the noise level goes up as the power is increased; springer, CO2, pumper or PCP.😉
