the whole reticle was out of whack on the lupy that I had go bad — looked thru the scope and it was cocked and off centerI'm curious.. If a scope is wrecked by shooting it on a springer what are the signs that it's broken?

One of the most common things that happens is your air rifle is shooting fine, then all of a sudden it starts tossing pellets like a shotgun. You look through it and the reticle is sitting sideways or diagonal to the turrets. It has spun the reticle. Happens to lots of scopes not rated for springers.I'm curious.. Ok, thanks, some of those symptoms sound pretty gnarly. One of the most common things that happens is your air rifle is shooting fine, then all of a sudden it starts tossing pellets like a shotgun. The glass will get loose or even it and the retaining ring will fall completely out.
Or it will not zero or hold zero not matter what you do. Many of them go this route.
Some scopes will last on normal power springers, however once you enter into the Magnum Springer arena very few will take the punishment for long.
The only two scopes I have that take the punishment and seem to last and have no issues is the Hawk AMX series and my favorite Vortex scopes. I am sure there are others also, these are just the two I have experience with. I prefer the Vortex as the reticle in the AMX is hard to see in certain light conditions.
I have had a great many so called approved and tested and lifetime warrantied scopes fail on magnum springers. So if you see a manufacturer say, it is rated for a 50 caliber BFG, if it is not designed for a magnum springer, you can bet that within a few shots it will self destruct.
Cheers
