What type of shooter are you? - Happy Plinker, Driven Perfectionist, or Multi-Pumper Mega-Man?

old school shooter here. Love to shoot paper. Nothing better than one ragged hole with 5 shot group at long range. Spent years with PBs
reloading and testing. But,,,, as pleasurable as that ragged hole is,,,,,,

I still giggle when a DRT squirrel falls through the canopy and bounces at my feet. Always have, always will.

If its feeling more like a job then to me the enjoyment is greatly decreased.
I'm meaning like having to be committed to sponsorship, travel, you know all that comes with trying to compete at a higher level.
Some people love this kind of thing and thrive in it due to their personality makeup which is fantastic for them. As well there's the prestige of doing well and winning some money. I'm happy for them and think its great !
Me, its all a bit much at this point in my life.

I can't even hardly talk myself into shooting alone anymore so I hardly practice. I do it but my trigger finger has gotten pretty itchy by then.

Thankfully I meet up with friends nearly every Wednesday for some shooting so it's half a social event and half keeping myself tuned up.
An old shooting acquaintance showed up at that friends place yesterday for a special occasion gun shoot who I hadn't seen in 10 years. He'd never shot a pcp before! He freaked out a little hitting 2" steel spinners at 100Y and a 1" cinder rock laying on the ground at 125Y then finally breaking it after bouncing it around a few times.
I also got him trying my 6mmBR at 1122Y. He hit the 4 cylinder engine block more than a few times and was smiling ear to ear.

Not hunting or pesting much but the coyotes are obviously increasing in number and howling at night near my house so I need to reduce the numbers this summer again. Mice are also on the increase so I need to take care of that too.

I'm glad spring is almost here!

A little of both! 4 shots @ 20yds my max range @ home with .22 RAW. Couldn't get myself to shoot 5....I know I would have messed up 😂.

Only shoot from bags to sight a gun in. I shoot for accuracy. Not for precision, as someone shooting off a rest would. My preference is shooting offhand, with sticks or a natural rest. Hardly ever off a bag.
My range is 40 yards. I like to reactive targets and will also shoot splatterburst targets. Since I use springers mostly open sights or a red dot. I have a few scoped 40 to 50 yards is perfect, as I would never attempt a shot while hunting further. And the shot is usually closer in that situation.

As far as pellets go. I'll find one or two my gun likes and will shoot them. I keep a book for each gun. Tips to myself pellet preference, hold preference etc...

Plinker yes.
Hunter yes.
Perfectionist ,good enough for me, and what I do and enjoy.

I shoot with my buddy Blanco almost daily.

I currently am a Shop Based 10 yard shooter IE: I have a 10 yard range set up in my machine shop. Been shooting there many years and primarily shoot my 2 HW 35's there for Iron Sight Practice. One gun has a Aperture Sight the other with the Stock Open Sights.

I was hoping to get our Airgun Shoots at the Ojai Valley Gun Club of interest to many more shooters but Alas, the recent rains have destroyed Hwy 33 on the way to Rose Valley and the rains haven't stopped. In fact it is raining right now! Our range is currently closed and it looks like it may be closed for the remainder of the year as Caltrans doesn't seem very interested in fixing the road anytime soon.

I got a new AV Avenger .25 for my Birthday last Nov and only got to shoot it twice at our range. I have it pretty much sussed out at the home range, and bought it with the intention of shooting the hundreds of Ground Squirrels that inhabit our range. They are literally every where but stay in their holes on the weekends when people are shooting. During the week when nobody is there they are out in force and the AVA will be devastating !

But,,, Right Now I'm a "Computer Shooter" watching videos and reading stories. cuz it's raining!

Happy plinker here. Used to chase "The Perfect Group", became too frustrating and boring. I have been shooting springers lately and am having a blast. My idea of a good time is shooting soup cans strung up with paracord so the cans return to zero. Horizontal or vertical, they are both fun. Shooting a can in half over a session is the bees knees in my book.

I think i fall somewhere in between. Being on a farm , there are always pests trying to get a foothold. I sight in dead on at 40 yds and i know my holdunder and over in between. Rare that i shoot farther at vermin. I know that pcp's can xtend that range quite a bit and i have dipped a toe or four in the pool. It's all i can afford to keep springers operational much less all the goodies required for pcp.

🤔 I like precision but is it possible farther distances with a airgun? At the same time it gets harder and harder for me to see the marks on the targets especially at those distances. Learning to read the wind just kills me. Whats worst is once I find the right combination I either go further or change the combination. 🤪
I can do 200 and 300 yards well right now in 22. And dabbling with 400 but with a 25 cal. But not having luck at all. I may go back with the 22 for 400. And because anything past 100Y is far to me as the morning goes by and the wind builds up, I will start plinking the Silhouettes. And sneaking out before people figure out its the guy with the red ryder carbine action air gun who did it 🤣

I say that because 95 percent of the time im the only air gun out there and the range master can never let me leave without saying "you'll shoot your eye out kid!"

Plinker and pester. And how about some multi-pumper love?
I use an old 760 in the shop and barn for those pesky sparrows. 3 quick pumps and it won't go through the tin roof.
There are no sights on that old bb\pellet shooter, I just shoot it by instinct. Most shots are only about 10 feet anyway.

“Driven” suggests a person “not” doing the driving.🙀 Trying to achieve a thing (shooting perfection), which we understand is not humanly possible? Seems futile, but as long as it’s fun? Heck yeah, otherwise it’s just another symptom… Perfectionist plinker here, first round hits at various distances. My misses? Of course, it’s the gun and ammo… Next time I’ll shoot better.🤓🙏

Yes, multi-pumpers are likely their own breed. Kudos! I haven't used a pumper since I was a kid. Can someone help me with the definition? Would this segue into Springers? I don't think so as even springer shooters could be in either category.

So what is the definition:
Definition: A person who likes to be immediately "in control" of every shot, and doesn't mind "looking like Popeye"💪 to achieve this level of precision.

Am I missing something?

Thanks to OCD, I’ve gone through the change.
I think that was my driving force as well. "Was that me, or was that the gun/pellet"...tweak, and repeat...

Seems futile, but as long as it’s fun?
Yes, but I do get a HELL of a lot of joy from putting that pellet EXACTLY where I wanted it to go. I think those rushes of dopamine are worth the effort.🤔

I’m a driven perfectionist but with a kicker. Once I get the most out of a gun and it is completely dialed in with the chosen projectile, I lose interest in it. I don’t sell it, I just only shoot it when I need to. A good airgun to me is one that you treat like a powder burner. Grab it when you want and it takes care of business. This was getting too easy with some guns, so I switched manufacturers for the challenge.

That's where I am too...pretty much as I don't ever seem to lose interest in any of my guns. I start with wanting a gun to be at a certain (desired) power level, and go through hell to get the right projectile and velocity by fine-tuning it. Once I get there, it has been rare that I change my decision. I really like hitting targets reliably.

For example, I just dialed in my 0.177 PCP today again with AA Field Heavy 10.34gr at 50 Yards. Once I got done, I was ringing 5" steel at 95 yards consistently with around 15mph wind, which was quite fun, I must say. Seemed that the ballistics are better on that gun than some of my 22cal. Interesting... 🤔

If I get perfection on a 22cal, I'll switch to 0.177 and go from there. Perhaps I'll have to try for a 3" target next time. This is where "Miss Daisies" driver is leading me down the path of destruction (@L.Leon ;)) as apparently I am not driving myself...or am I?
