What to do?

Dillon,

I have the chance to look through a NightForce NX8, I dont know the exact model, but the scope was installed on Justin's impact compact, that should mean something.

I can ask for the exact model if that helps, really nice glass and magnification, it was a FFP scope and also tiny, have you look into that one? It's perfect for a bullpup IMO.

Orion,

I have looked into them. Thanks for the mention of them. While I do think they would be an excellent scope compact scope with tons of features, the NX8 2.5-20x50 version is only about 3oz lighter than my current Ares ETR. I'm hoping for something in the 22-25oz range. Then again not sure if it's worth it.

I did mount my Midas Tac 4-16x44 on it and man does it fit it nicely. Vortex tactical rings in low height and it can't fit any closer.

Lol again length isn't a concern of mine. As Orion stated it's exactly why I use a sunshade. I shoot alot in dawn and dusk conditions so keeps the sun off my lense. And keeps dust away from the lense better than not. I never use a scope without one. Just personal preference.

At most it adds maybe an ounce or 2. And personally I prefer the looks with one on. But yeah all my scopes have them and is a part that is added along with rings, scope caps and a bubble level on all my scopes.

I tend to use the sunshade a lot too... It helps me with two things, less crap (dust and sand) gets inside my glass and also well, helps with sun

100% and Dillon's analysis too.

Wearing those cool Ray Bans 😎 you don’t need that sun shade😀. I get the “sun” part, “dust and sand”? Then what are the scope lens covers for? If the wind kicks up a dust storm while I’m pesting I simply close the lens covers and wait it out.

I didn’t mean to start something about sunshades or I guess dust tubes. I was just curious because I’ve never had an issue with the sun with a quality scope. I just use flip up caps when in the field for snow, rain or dust. If you think they look cool, that’s great. Some guys think a gun cluttered up with all kinds of gadgets or having a big black can on the end of it looks cool too. We all have different tastes. I will admit that in the early 90’s, when they started including dust tubes/sunshades with scopes, I briefly was into the Hubble telescope look. It was short lived when I returned from a hunting trip to Colorado and it galled itself on. Now for your quest for a lighter but still adequate scope, here’s a tip. Get away from the trendy cool airgun scopes. If you’re getting quality glass, you can even get away from fat tubes and return to 1 inch. Look in the x-14 or x-15 power range and you’ll find what your looking for. I’ve been where you’re at. Trendy scopes nowadays are porkers. I don’t have a problem with a porker on a bench gun or a gun I lay in a field for hours on my belly with it on a bipod. But I know the kind of hunting you do and there are scopes out there that are what you’re looking for. I have them.

Hmmm what did you do to the mirror?

Lol that was my wife. She needed to drop something off at a family friends house at night so took it and when backing out didn't see the big rail road tie they used as a post and destroyed the mirror. It was her dad's truck with 320k miles on it. Tons of scratches, dents and other things. For a farm truck I drive maybe 2-3 miles a day to and from the dairy and to the fields, just can't spend the $300 to get a new mirror for it.

12oz may sound insignificant but it’s not when it comes to what’s on top of a rifle. The weird thing about a Taipan is it’s such a cinder block to begin with. I fought with mine with I first got it trying to make it swing and handle like other bullpups that I had. It just wasn’t happening. Some guns because of what they weigh or how they’re weighted, it’s really noticeable when you drop weight on a scope. For me, my Taipan wasn’t. It always felt like I was carrying a 2x6 piece of treated lumber. But that’s what makes the gun shoot so well. It’s just plain old dead when the trigger breaks. Crosshairs don’t jump.

Hopefully March will come out with the 1.5-15 in FFP with a decent reticle but it's gonna be big money.

The March 3-24x52 is what I'd look for but expensive too. Check out the FML-T1 reticle. I always wanted a March scope with that reticle in it.

Although not exactly lightweight, I like my Helos G2 2-12 as well. It would definitely make a great hunting scope, I don't hunt much but one day I'll get a chance to shoot some critters looking through it, besides flies.

Hard to beat the ole Midas TAC isn't it??!!

The MarchF 3-24 is hard to beat, but I think you'd be fine with the 42mm version. I have one and it's super bright.

Could also look into the Hawke Frontier 30 FFP. I just got one in 4-20 with tree reticle and so far I'm pleased. Have yet to mount it, but for the $700 I spent it seems like a pretty nice scope. NX8 it is not though.

Hey Dillon, this post cracks me up! I ordered a Nightforce 3.5-32 NX8 and mounted it on my Taipan. I really new I didn't like it the first time I picked up the rifle. I took it out to the bench to sight it in. It is a nice scope. It shoots great! After sighting it in I walked back to the porch and shot a mag at my silhouettes offhand. Right then I knew I needed to go back to the smaller Sightron. So the NX8 is up for sale. Too bad I wanted it for a couple years. I was pleasantly surprised when I saw your post. I thought I was being too picky.

Try a Hawke Frontier out and let us know how you like it compared to your previous scopes.
The Hawke seems to meet most your criteria.

I have been following this thread with interest as I would like to try something else for my Taipan Compact other than the 4-16 Discovery it currently has.

I wish Meopta had a 1” FFP scope with the MRAD recitle as the 30mm version weighs 30oz.

( Note:I have been buying and using the Burris one piece quick release mounts with the inserts for scope elevation/centering (10.7 ounce ish ) my reason is to have a few scopes that I can interchange when needed. I just cant bring myself to sell the discovery 3-12 and 4-16 but want something nicer with a tree recital for long range so hopefully by investing in a few of these mounts and someday with a nicer scope I can quickly change between them with minimal zeroing time.
I get the Burris mount is $$, as more scopes is $$, and the extra weight so this does not help you but figure I would mention it anyway.)
