What the heck happened here?

Happens because the brain is very small and thanks to the angel the pellet completely missed the brain. I would recommend vital shots as they are far more forgiving!

I’m still fairly new. All I k know is the hades would have been doing 890fps
I don't think the pellet was the issue here. The 18 is going to deliver about the same energy as the faster 16 grain. I prefer the 18 over the Hades because my rifles seem to shoot it better, which is the most important factor.

@jt-outta-cali , the secret to this is to place targets and make practice shots from your various shooting positions and make a little range card so that you know exactly where to hold for each situation. As long as the pellet you have chosen is making good groups, then it becomes a matter of learning your trajectory at various ranges and angles of inclination.

Look at nervous trigger's anatomy chart and know your best aim point. It changes with the angle, as pointed out, and you have to imagine the path of your projectile beyond the surface impact point.

Here's the impact of the pellet ( slight yellow tint) basically blew out jaw and throat.. Good video though.

boy was that a .177 or .22? Reason I ask i now wonder if my .177 Diana is enough for squirrel or maybe I should have gone .22 caliber...
I take PLENTY of squirrel with .177. Shot placement is far more important than FPE. However, I always take my squirrels with around 20 FPE at the muzzle with .177 or .22. I also keep the distances to under 50 yards give or take...

I don't know exactly how high the scope center line is above the bore with a M3 but it is a bullpup so it will be at least somewhat high. My P35 in 22 would hit at least a half an inch low at 16 yards. It is zero'd for about 35 yards. A 40 yard zero would reduce this maybe 0.1 inch but it is still going to shoot significantly low. I like to shoot groups at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 yards to understand point of impact. It looks like you have a bait station at 16 yards where you shot this one, putting a target out there and shooting at least 3 shots would be worthwhile I think. If you also may shoot at other distances then I would do a series of tests at various ranges.

Animals are tough little creatures that just follow instinct. I deer hunted with a guy that shot one. We went over to where the deer was when he shot it and saw a gut pile. I thought WTF, this is the first day of hunting, how can there already be a gut pile? It turns out the the shot sliced open the abdomen and all of the guts from the lungs down fell out and the deer still ran 75 yards.

My gun is sighted for this exact spot. I have a bore laser in case I need to go
