What speeds are you shooting NSA 20.2gr

Got my R5M tuned for 18gr JSBs at 900fps. The NSA 20.2gr are around the 850fps range. There shooting quite well but know they can be better. My question is what are you guys shooting them at out of your various guns? Im debating tuning it up to shoot both say 950fps with 18gr and 900fps with the 20.2gr. But seems most slug shooters go for 950fps+

I have a .22 EDgun R3 Long, and it likes the NSA 20.2 grain slugs. (.217) I’ve tried them at 960, 985, and 1020 FPS. It likes them at 985 best. Just today I took a shot at a ground squirrel at 256 yards, and missed by a couple of inches. I could see the hit under the squirrel, who was sitting at the top of a wood pile. Your barrel should be similar to mine, just shorter. I think mine is 590 mm.

You guys guns all have more "oomph!" than mine - AA S510 XS Ultimate Sporter .22. I tried the FX Hybrids when they first came out and no joy - even @high power I couldn't get anything better than low 700's out of it. I have a box of about 70 FX slugs just sitting in a drawer now. I recently saw another thread in here re: someone having good luck shooting Nielsen .216's @17.5g so I grabbed a box of them. They work much better in my AA. ( lighter + the AA is definitely a choked LW barrel ) I'm getting 865-875fps out of them @full power and they seem to be reasonably accurate - jury is still out as to weather or not they're as accurate as the jsb 16g pellets that I typically shoot with that gun. That gun is a laser with those.

I guess my question(s) are -- if this is the best I can get (speedwise) out of this gun with these (quite light for slugs) . . . should I just resign myself to the fact that this AA is "only" a pellet shooter? I mean I can run 18 gr jsb pellets which are HEAVIER than these slugs but in theory ( or maybe not theory - proven) less efficient beyond 70-80 yards. Beyond 70-80 yards is the main reason for my wanting to play with slugs - just to see / play / learn how to shoot at longer distances. I've taken several pigeons and starlings at 70'ish yards with the 16g jsb's ( conditions permitting - little if any wind ) so I know I can do it at that distance.

870 is plenty fast enough for the 17.5's.

The key is to test them at longer ranges against the 16 gr. JSB's. A little less accuracy at close range may turn to better accuracy at long range as the slugs do better further out. They will definitely drop less and drift in the wind less, not to mention pack more punch with their hollowpoints.

I have spent time with the r5m and today my findings are @920-930fps with the nsa 20.2 slugs with good results almost moa @75 yrd but I need to get use to the shooting behavior of the gun. Also the wind @ 75yrds has an effect on the light slugs, I am use to shooting 36gr slugs out of my 25cal with no drift @ 75yrd in the same wind but that can be expected.

I have so many 18gr that in mid July I will tune in for the 18gr pellets and see how it works out. I know in the past lowering the settings on my other guns calmed the recoil down and lot not to mention the increased shot count. At the setting on the gun now seems like I’m always refilling with air and to load the slugs I use an Allen key to seat the slugs. Thanks and good luck
