Just purchased a RAW from Ken Hicks at SPAW - HM 1000X .22 HP in a pepper laminate thumbhole lefty stock.
Had it out at the outdoor range today and shot at 50 and 100 yards ( about 25 total groups in all; most shot groups were 5 shots ). I was shooting for "groups" today and not for score. Very little wind, but very hot. Spent 3 hours and this was my first outdoor range shooting with the new RAW. I regularly use this range with my recently tuned (Motorhead) Daystate Huntsman Regal XL .22 HUMA, an Anschutz 64 MPR .22 LR, and some assorted Break Barrel air guns. Today, was the RAW's first showing.
I shot off a back Caldwell rest with a Harris bipod off a bench. Used both SST and magazines (3) to experiment with any accuracy differences. I shot about 150 pellets in all, with the gun doing very well at 50 yards and pretty solid at 100 yards as well. I would characterize a majority of the groups at 50 yards at less than an inch CTC; with some less than 3/4 of an inch. I had one 5 shot group which was a ragged hole, but I could not repeat this again with the other 50 yards groups.
I shot around 10-12 groups at 100 yards; some were in the 1 and 3/4 " range, with a couple groups less than an inch. I zero'd for 50 and 100 yards respectively vs. using holdovers. Scope is Aztex Emerald FFP 5.5 -25 X 50 MM.
I know from talking with Ken that this rifle likes the JSB 25 redesign pellets. My question to other RAW users of this particular gun is this: What other pellets and / or brands shoot well for you with this configuration - HM 1000X HP .22 caliber?? I am particularly interested in shooting pellets @ 50-100 yards and would like to try other pellets, but would like to ask the other experienced RAW users what they have found to be good as well. I will eventually post a more thorough review with pics of the gun, some groups and other learnings as I get more comfortable with this rifle.
I can't say enough good things about working with Ken Hicks at SPAW. Also had a conversation or two with Martin. Both were very responsive and Ken and I had many conversations while I waited for the gun to be built.
Thanks in advance!
