What is your most accurate Bench rest AG at 50 yards?

My Thomas HPX is far superior to the other rifles I have or have had. My new 20 fpe Thomas FT rifle is very precise as well but blows in the wind quite a bit at 50Y as it should compared to the more powerful gun.

The HPX is not the problem. Me learning to tune it correctly which can double precision, getting the wind right, and using a solid bench, are most of my problems. 22 cal RDM's are another problem in and of its self. I don't have the mindset for BR but if I worked at it I'm pretty sure some 250's would come about on N50 targets. I've shot somewhere around 25 N50 targets, yes that's all, but highest I've got so far was a 249 and a couple 248's. Always a flyer or three for various aforementioned reasons.

Not even easy with custom swaged slugs but I enjoy shooting slugs much more because these aren't affected by wind so much and hardly get flyers.

Don't shoot off wobbly benches or frustration will follow. I gave up until I get one built.

Steve

I can totally relate to your above comments. There are so many variables that go into posting a good 50 yard score. FWIW, I have probably shot between 100-150 N50 cards at my local outdoor range and have not scored higher than a 246 with either of my HP .22 guns - RAW HM1000x and DS Safari. Have had a half dozen cards in the low to mid 240’s too. I’m constantly challenged perfecting my tune/velocity, finding the optimum slug or pellet, wind reading with 2 flags, and using a consistent technique and hold with my gun.

RDs - much has been written about the RD Monsters by top Competition BR shooters, but since I don’t sort or size I get a flyer or two about every 10 pellets and it can blow an otherwise good score. Most times it is due to bad wind reading or a mental mistake. However, there are times when I am sure it’s the pellet and not the wind.

Re. Slugs - I know Mike N casts his own, but I have not seen many other .22 Cal HP air gun guys using slug weights higher than 30g. I can’t prove it, but I suspect if a slug closer to 40g in weight was used ( like a 40g RF bullet) the AGs would be posting higher scores. I know Mike has another thread about using slugs at 50 and 100 yards, but none of those responders are using heavier .22 cal slugs as I recall.

Learn to PROOF lots of pellets, Get on top of the "To be a Great shooter" skill set .... Tool used becomes less important.

Scott,

What information is available to understand how to Proof pellets? Is there a "To be Great Shooter" skill set - outline or book available somewhere? What is your reference?

How does the average Joe find this information or learn it?

Directing me to any starting point would be appreciated.

Thanks ....

I know. Let me explain.

I regularly shoot a RAW .22 HP and a Daystate Safari .22 HP at 50 yards. I love both guns and this is not a request to get suggestions for hunting guns or advice.

I am looking for opinions and experience from some regular BR shooters as to what you think is your best BR gun —- at 50 yards? Please explain why you recommend a particular gun.

Thanks

Tom

Hey Tom,

What was your original intent with this post?

Your title was " What is your most accurate Bench rest AG at 50 yards?."

Was this meant to ask anyone out there with a airgun, "what gun is their best bench shooter at 50 yards?" or were you suggesting, actual competition shooters only - respond?

I have two RAW HM1000x LRT's in .22 and .25 caliber which are likely my best shooters at 50 yards (my local range), however, these are not exceptionally, sophisticated bench rest shooters (by definition) that could win an annual competition nor have I ever entered one. I know this counts for me as truthful, but I'm not sure about some others.

I wasn’t trying to limit this to competition BR shooters only. I was attempting to get some input from all types of BR shooters ( beginners, experienced and competitive match shooters) as to what guns they perceive to be the most accurate for 50Y BR.

Mike correctly pointed out that scoring accuracy is an essential ingredient to assess the answer to my question, but all input was helpful so far.

Oh ... you were asking What other shooters felt was THE Best Bench Rest AG at 50 yards?

Well .... that would most often be a Thomas AG - Right! Recent history has proven it to be the correct answer ...
