What is the best diameter for long range shooting

What is the best caliber for long range shooting for 200 to 250 yards on pigs and whitetail I know it's a bit of a stretch just wanted to know what would be the best one
At those distances? With airguns, I guess it could be done, but highly impractical. You need to ask this question in a powder burners forum.

Rather than smack you around, I will offer some practical advice.
In Idaho where I live an air gun is legally classified as a “short range weapon”.
There is good reason for this. Most guns capable of taking big game develop between 200 and 600 foot pounds of energy. That is at the muzzle. The nature of the projectiles dictate they bleed velocity and energy pretty quickly.
If you want to hunt big game with an air gun accept the challenge of a short range weapon and rely on your hunting skills rather than your shooting skills. Much past 100 yards and you are risking a wounded animal, a long blood trail and an elevated chance of losing your game.
Respect the animals you hunt and enjoy the challenge.

Not just a bit..but a crazy stretch. Between the trajectory like a mortar at those distances and the amount of drop in inches per yard, it would be a fool’s errand. Not to mention the size of the groups at that range for a big bore are probably going to be about the size of a paper plate even if shooting off a bench..which you won’t be. In a word..unethical. Thank you for the info
That makes a lot of sense I'm not trying to rely on my shooting I'm just trying to figure out the full capability of the kill distance of these things as I shoot a lot of 22 rimfire and we have a handful of air gun guys that should small calibers and they're shooting pretty good

When I read the title I was all excited thinking I would tell some experiences I’ve had shooting extreme long range with an airgun. Then you said pig and deer. lol.

I have this to contribute. I won’t be the guy to ask about pig and deer. My largest caliber is .25. And with that, I’ve made some impressive shots and some very impressive misses. 200 is a long way out for and air rifle to be consistent at. I have 2 .22 rim fires that make journey quite often and do it with almost boredom on 1-1/2” plates. My Impacts, even though they are within a cats whisker of being as accurate as my rimfires at 100yds, just can’t do it with the regularity my rimfires can. I don’t think it is me, or the guns, I think it is the velocity and the shape/weight of the slug that probably is their downfall. I can hit an 1-1/2” plate at 200yds with them, but not at the consistency to be ethical in any game larger than a Jack rabbit. I’m sure there’s guys out there that can do it all day without issue. But I haven’t reached that level of tuning in my game. It takes allot of work to make what air rifles are capable of to realize that capability. Personally, from my perspective, if your going to shoot medium game with an air rifle, consider long range at 100yds, and build your setup for less than that and you’ll be pleased with those results. As for caliber, nothing less than a .45, in fact I would look closely at the Airforce guns. They seem to be the leader in the big bore game. Keep in mind this is all viewed from an FX guy, so opinions my very.

Instead of smashing new members and this is why this place probably doesn't grow very much why don't you help or explain where to find the information on this form because it's a little difficult to run

That search function at the upper right hand corner of your phone or your desktop looks exactly like the search function on every other forum on the internet. I am informed that you are not familiar with other forums. It is a magnifying glass..

If you don't know the difference between diameter, caliber and cartridge you probably better start with that search function. Again I am informed that you come from a PB background and are completely new to air gunnery. Welcome to the forum. Take the time to read the rules.

I'm sorry I was short with you. Good luck in your endeavors.

In my opinion 100 yards is way too far for big game with air rifles.
There’s probably exceptions, but overall a slug hitting a deer in the lungs at 100 yards is most likely just going to poke a hole through the lungs.
No doubt it’ll kill the animal, but it would likely run a long way without leaving much of a blood trail.
A slug at that range wouldn’t have enough energy to mushroom for maximum tissue damage.
