What is average distance for a .177

Was shooting one of my favorite springers tonight, Berman R8, I tuned gun with a JM Spring, Vortec Vacseal and correct lubes. The most accurate pellet is 7.9 JSB Exact shooting at 735 FPS. I was shooting at 30 yards and was surprised how accurate gun is so I moved target out to 50 and again was printing some very impressive groups, was kind of surprised how accurate a medium power springer could be.Conditions where dead calm and clear. Then just for fun I set a soup can at 80 yards, took me a few shots to range correct mil dot but once I did I was able to hit every time, what do most expect out of these medium power springers. I didn’t think pellet would have anything left at that range but gun was still accurate.

I have a tx200 in 177 shooting brown box crosman premier 7.9gr pellets at approx 890 fps. The gun is a little twangy and i will eventually change out the spring (hi power) to smooth it out. But when i had my upstate NY shooting property I would set up small soup cans at 100 to 120 yards and consistently hit them. Biggest issue i saw was even the slightest of breezes would send the pellet way off target. But I would never shoot at an animal at that distance. But it is amazing the accuracy of a light weight 177.

177 Caliber is such a small caliber for long distance, especially with wind.

I shot a 177 Sumatra long gun using the Eun Jin Heavy Domed pellets at

100 yards in near windless conditions off of a really good rifle rest and got

an inch to inch and a half average. I would expect an inch or better under

windless conditions and perhaps 2-3 inches with an R8.

50 yards is a standard for lot's of shooting ( .177 is no exception ) , 55yards is standard Field Target shoots. Folks in the UK seemingly have no issue with .177 at 40m for rabbits & such. I've seen other shoot excellent groups at 50 yards with 6fpe in .177 -RWS75- and personally have a 12fpe .177 that groups well at a full 100 yards, opens to 3-4" at 115 yards and wont hit the paper target at 125y but that's just playing with extremes on a perfect day.

To me it seems the .177 is the airgun caliber perhaps .22. If I personally need a ton more power something other than air would be used.

Stretch it on out there it's a lot of good clean fun.

Accuracy rules.
