What Are The Benefits Of Having The Scope Optically Centered ?

heavy, my understanding and experience has been that the subtensions on lower end scopes tend to loose their ability to hold a consistent "0" after using the full range of available elevation over a period of time (X=recycle). Keeping these scopes closer to "optical center" tends not to stress the subtension springs out, keeping the repeatability more manageable and potentially extend the useful life of the optic. Your "Tier One" scopes, on the other hand, are truly made to have a repeatable "0" through out is entire elevation range, for the life of the scope (Y=lifetime warranty). I could not say what the price point is where this repeatable quality starts, or, what the component design and material are to achieve this level of repeatability, for the life of a given scope. More to be shared by those who know much more than I.

imho, this is mostly because the center of the lenses are generally the most optically correct area of the lens, and depending on the cost of the optic, the edges may not yield as good a picture as the center.

👆👆👆 that!!!

depending on the quality of the scope most budget scopes do not have edge to clarity. especially with airguns where we have a very large drop/arc if you start with optically center parallel with the bore you will have to dial up to zero and then you won’t have much elevation left to dial. Even if you don’t dial the image quality will generally deteriorate once you need more hold over.

the goal is to have the distance your shoot the most optically centered. If your shoot 100 yards all the time then adjust your adjustable rings so that when either dialed or just looking at 100 yard with optical center so you get best picture. Basically you either you need 20MOA base or adjustable rings for airguns, if you want to shoot really far then you might want to zero at the very edge so when you dial for 200 yards you will be near optical center but that’s a little bit on the extreme side.

Here is a review with a high end scope that I ran across and it stuck in my head.
