Went to test out all the toys for my Crown today and got my best 100 group Ever!

Squeezed out a trip to the range today, been crappy weather for weeks on end and got a bunch of toys I want to try out. Mainly want to see how I like the ST chassis and if wind allow test out the FX detachable tuner. Plus want to try NSA .2165 slugs I ordered in 3 different sizes since some people say .2165 shot better for them.

However the wind was just kicking hard when I got there.

Found the knee of the power curve for 20, 23 and 27.5 grain slugs with the crown. Found loading problems using Huma pin probe with FX mag holding slugs so might have to see if Orion has a fix so I single loaded the slugs after. Waited for the wind to die down so I try the tuner but no go.

About 3:30 or 30 minutes before the range close the wind started to lay down so I moved the target to 100 yards for giggles. The 217 27.5 grain NSA slugs shot the this group, I almost fell over after the 5th shot. To say I was nervous on the 5th shot was an understatement. Clearly there is some luck involved with the wind but it is by far the best 100 yard 5 shot group for me ever!!!

The best part was the dreaded 5th shot, I was super nervous and took a least a minute to finally pull the trigger. Then I watched the slug magically flew though one of the existing holes, simply couldn’t not believe my eyes!!! Can you tell which hole was a double? Took me a while to figure out.

as far as the different size slugs go 2165 slugs seem to fly about 10-15 fps faster. However, even though the 27.5 grain slug is significantly slower they do seem a little more stable in the wind so might have to stick with this slug!!! But will find a calm day to test them again and try to see if the tuner can make the groups of the other sizes of slugs shrink.

@qball I really don’t know which hole the 5th shot went into. I was thinking maybe the second hole from the left. It’s amazing to watch that occur at that range. Good shooting and good looking group.

@qball You ever shoot a group group so good that you want to stop there so you could say you had a helluva shoot for the day? Like you don’t want to shoot anymore for fear of shooting poor groups following the good one?

Looks like I was close. The second hole was my guess too. Looking at the paper fibers in that close up photo, which brand of target is that? The paper appears thicker than what I’m used to shooting. Looks like it won’t easily break the thin pieces between holes in proximity to one another.

I certainly had some 3 and 4 shot groups I dare not shoot near again! Hahahaha! However I usually just keep going until I’m low on ammo/air or the range is closing…….like a gambling addict at the local casino! 😝

the target paper is just standard Costco printer paper printed with graphics from AGN. They really work well and with very crisp holes from the hollow point tips. Not to mention they are about as cheap as paper target can possibly be! 👍

Hey @qball what liner are you shooting in your crown? I have a crown and would love to be able to shoot that accurately. Also how is it tuned, reg pressure etc.

liner is 600mm superior heavy with carbon sleeve glued on with only 1 spacer at the very end near the muzzle.

Reg at 150 bars and HS preload maxed out meaning the if I add more preload with HS on Max the gun won’t clock. I rarely shoot with the HS wheel on max, best accuracy is always 90% of max speed, 600mm sweet spot speed is about 920-950 depending on the ammo weight.

I do have the screw on tuner but I haven’t even adjusted it once it but having a bit of weight along with carbon liner sleeve does seem to help with the harmonic.

also I spent a lot of time timing the wind so unless you have very consistent or no wind you can’t get a group like that even if the gun is capable of shooting that group. Like I said I had a bit of luck in my side with that group, average group that day was just over an inch, wind at that range is very hard to predict because it changes a lot.

jaycie4, a good way to see if you have a good barrel or not is to shoot at 50 yards as was mentioned and if you can get at least a clover leaf move to 100 yards. Except make it so that your aim point is not where the pellet impact point is, that way you won’t shoot out the aim point.

If you have a tiny little aim point that you are concentrating on and carefully shoot off of a very stable platform at the aim point your group will develop tightly because you are aiming so precisely at the tiny aim point and not shooting out the aim point. It’s mind blowing how good it can get if it all comes together. It’s definitely for real!
