Well I did it - I bought my first springer.

Great choice. If can get some different pellets to try, I highly recommend it. Also if you decide to do any tunes, to the spring piston, you will need to try different pellets as well. Last year I got a HW97, and after trying 6 different pellets found one it liked best. Then did a Vortek spring upgrade, and the best pellet changed. None of them were horrible, but each time there was one pellet weight that it really seemed to prefer.

Awesome rifle that should last you quite a while. I really like shooting the HW97. I was always a PCP guy, and now that springer is the one I grab when I just want to take a few shots after work to relax.

Back in the 80’s when Beeman introduced the .20 caliber through the R1 we all jumped on the wagon. Coming from a pump up Sheridan we were elated. The squirrels didn’t stand a chance. It’s a great in between caliber. Easier to handle pellet than the .177. My tired hands likes the .25. The 77 and .20 is a perfect match. I started dabbling with PCP’s but like you said, when you just want to relax and shoot a few shots I always grab a springer. I find PCP’s easier to shoot accurately. Springer’s make you work for it. You’re starting out with the right rig, just remember, when coming from a PCP, the game has changed.
A PCP is like a dog. Loves unconditionally (Easy). A springer is like cat. You have to earn it. (Challenging)

I’ve been selling all my PCP’s. I just don’t use them. I’m a springer guy!

Emailed Discovery to ask directly which of the scope lines they considered Springer rated and got the following answer:

HS series
HD series
ED series

Do they last? While I have a Discovery scope, it's on a PCP so honestly not a clue if they hold up.

UTG Bugbuster is supposed to be although I've never tried one so I won't sit here and tell you yes for absolute fact...lol.

For Hawke, every scope line they have EXCEPT their Vantage scopes is springer rated. I have their Airmax 4-12x40 AO scopes on both my own R9 .20 and HW95 .22. Some like them, some don't. I'm one of the minority that likes them.

There are plenty of others and the members here will happily make recommendations, just depends on what your budget for a scope and rings is.

The other big issue (pet of mine) is the slop in eye focus ring in the Chinese made scopes. When looking through the scope and putting pressure on the focus ring you’ll see the reticle image move. Better scopes made in the Philippians are superior here. Nikon who dropped all scopes, Burris who now makes some in China, Vortex in the Viper plus models are made in the Philippians. Their eye focus ring is usually quite firm. People struggling with consistent accuracy may want to keep this in mind. On my scopes with slop here I do not use a cap on the rear. Don’t want to disturb it. If it’s real sloppy I cut a plastic shim (black zip tie) and fiddle with it in and out until the focus ring lands firmly on a ‘wall” (zip tie) exactly were I want it. That’s the best way. I miss the old tried and true locking nut on the other side.

HW77k arrived yesterday and have had a chance to put a few shots through it. I was a bit bummed to see no open sights included, not sure I want to spend the $100 to get the front and rear sights. I put the Discovery 3-12 on it for now.

The whole shot cycle is very smooth with not much kick - I actually expected more which led me to pull out the chrono. It's shooting the .20 13.3gr pellets at 645 fps for around 11.7 fpe. From what I've read I was expecting a bit closer to 15 fpe. For those with experience please let me know what you think - I might be interested in sending it to a tuner to check out and re-seal.

Now one thing I'm not sure how to tackle is I see a bit of rust in the groove of the top dovetail. Any information on how to approach that would be appreciated.
