Vortek Beeman R7 .177 Velocity after Break In

I purchased a Beeman R7 about five years ago from Pyramid air, after shooting for about a month I decided to install a Vortek PG2 kit, when I first chronied gun after tune velocity with 7.87gr JSB Exacts was just under 600 fps not much more than stock velocity. I haven't checked velocity in a few years until today and velocity is now close to 660 fps with same pellet. Never thought velocity would climb this high after a few thousand rounds,. I also noticed that shot to shot consistency is 5 fps or less. I installed an old Beeman Blue Ribbon scope on gun that I had for years sitting in the box and at 25 yards the little R7 prints sub dime sized groups. I am thrilled with the performance of this little springer with the PG2 kit.I am a big time PCP shooter but will never give up my collection of Springer's and Theoben Gas rams.

I have two HW30's, both fully broken in, and had never run them on the chrony, so this got me curious. So here are a couple more data points for anyone wondering:

(10 shot strings at about 5 feet, pellets unsorted straight from the tin, no warmup shots or anything else):

HW30s bone stock, never opened up:

  •  658fps / 6.73 fpe with Meisterkugeln 7.0 (spread of 16, but would only be 8 excluding the first shot)
  • 592 fps / 6.57 fpe with JSB 8.44 (spread of 9)

HW30K laminate, JIPA tuned with Vortek kit, chopped and choked barrel:

  • 700 fps / 7.62 fpe with Meisterkugeln 7.0 (spread of 7)
  • 620 fps / 7.21 fpe with JSB 8.44 (spread of 9)

Like the OP, I was pretty surprised by the power levels of the Vortek gun. Both cock and shoot very smoothly, but there is a difference in the shot cycle of the two guns. Personally, I prefer the stock one compared to the Vortek kit, which has a little sharper recoil, but it's not harsh in any way and if you want a little extra power, the difference in perceived recoil (if you can call it that) is pretty modest. What I think is the most interesting is how tight both spreads are, even on the one that's never been touched. My two cents: if you really want a little more power the Vortek kit is a nice way to go. Otherwise, even right out of the box, it is just a great little gun.
