Hi , I have a 40yr old Beeman R1 and I want to change the barrel seal , how do I remove the old seal and install the new seal ?

The breech seal?
Take something sharp like a pick, stick it in the seal, and yank it out. It's just a ring that presses in a groove. Then simply press the new one in.
OEM seals are usually a little easier to install and are my preference.

I am wrong , I purchased my R1 in 1981 , they first year they were produced and imported to the U.S. !

I had a hunch you meant the R1. The R9 didn't bust onto the scene till about 1995. 
Get her fixed up with a new breech seal and get back to enjoying it. Nice guns, and even nicer that you've had yours that long.

As a side note, once the old seal has been removed,carefully clean the groove it was in and re-install the new seal without oil or grease. Just clean and dry.
