Crosman Vintage Crosman 760 and 761XL Accuracy

Treefrog suggested a new thread to discuss the matter. Got horrible accuracy the other day with my Crosman vintage 761XL (rifled barrel) with copper colored Barracuda pellets. Did some more testing with other pellets. Some premium pellets that you thought would give you great accuracy like the new Benjamin Match (left in picture) and Crosman Premiers looked like shotgun patterns (5 shot groups at 20 yards). However a few are giving more reasonable accuracy you would expect from this gun like the RWS Match Wadcutters (right in picture, best tested so far). The H&N match light waddcutters and the H&N FT Trophy 4.52 gave comparable groups to the RWS match pellets. I have several more pellets to test and then will take the best three and whittle it down for the winner. Curious what groups that others are getting from vintage 760s and 761s with rifled barrels. Hopefully no one with a $38 Walmart smooth barrel 760 is getting better than 1" groups at 20 yards. Please post pictures and recommendations. Thanks for all replies.

As near as I can remember, winter boredom put me in the basement with about eight-yards to work with when checking my guns' accuracy.

It was a surprise that the smooth-bore was as accurate as the rifled barrel. Here are some pics of what I found.

Now that it's warming up, I'll see what they do at greater range. I mostly just use BBs to shoot an old trash-can at 40-yards with the Revelation these days...

Cheers,

J~

A little more data...

Ten yards, five pumps, various pellets. The Revelation 760 was pitted against the piecemeal 760 with the XL barrel. A dot scope with no magnification was swapped between the two.

The XL won. Tightest group was sub- 1/2" using older Crosman wadcutters. They both favor the same pellet. BB groups were about the same at 1.5" at ten yards.

Cheers,

J~

Sounds like your accuracy at 10 yards is similar to mine at 20 yards. When I get all the pellets and BBs tested, I will post results.

Attached is my 5 shot pellet and BB testing for my Crosman vintage 761XL at 20 yards. The pictures numbers are numbered 1st row left to right and then 2nd row left to right. Go from the below list to identify the pictures as some of the numbers on the actual targets shown in the pictures is incorrect. Pardon the #pictures and different targets. Thinning out my targets and going to paper plates and colored markers. Anyway the Crossman Black Widow was a good surprise although I do not intend to shoot BBs in this airgun to protect the rifling. Avanti BBs shot terrible. The pellets that I thought performed well was 1. RWS R10 Match 8.2 gr, 2. H&N Field Target 4.51 8.64 gr, 3. H&N Field Target 4.52 8.64 gr 8. H&N Barracuda 9.57 gr and 9. JSB Exact Heavy Diablo 10.34 gr with the latter two probably best for pesting.

1st Picture
1. RWS R10 Match 8.2 gr
2. H&N Field Target 4.51 8.64 gr
3. H&N Field Target 4.52 8.64 gr
4. H&N Finale Match Light 7.87 gr

2nd Picture
5. Crosman Premier Dome 10.5 gr
6. Crosman Fast Flight Lead Free Pointed 5.54 gr
7. Benjamin Match Grade Dome 10.5 gr
8. H&N Barracuda 9.57 gr

3rd Picture
9. JSB Exact Heavy Diablo 10.34 gr
10. H&N Field Target Trophy 4.50 8.64 gr
11. Crosman Premier Wadcutter 7.4 gr
12. Crosman Premier Destroyer 7.4 gr
