Vibration and screws....

This has been an annoyance since I bought this rifle. That rounded nut backs out which causes the pivot bolt to back out. Next thing you know the barrel is too loose between the fork. I have had this gun apart numerous times which leads to worn fastener surfaces. Even new lock washers would not keep the assembly tight. I have two new bolt assembly's in my spare parts box, but wanted to give this repair a try first.

Started out with a 4-40 in mind but that little set screw hex stripped easy. Went to a 5-40 size with a stronger resistance to stripping. Screwed the nut onto an M7 bottom tap while working it. Put nail polish on the threads for hopefully keeping that set screw tight. With assembly properly tight I marked the bolt for a flat, and put a matching flat, Dremel ground, on the M7 bolt end. I bet this will work keeping the assembly tight.

Looks like a good repair. I had the same problem with my .22cal RWS 34. Tried Blue Loctite. Didn't work. Ended up lightly peening the threads of the barrel pivot bolt. Instead of Loctite I used VibraTite VC3 applied to both the male bolt threads of the bolt and the female threads of the nut. This thread lock is different in nature from Loctite. Locate cures slower and harder than Vibratite. Vibratite dries extremely fast and softer. I applied it and let dry for ten minutes. Then assembled. Problem solved ! This softer material deadens the vibration more between the two fastener surfaces. Worked for me.

How about Loctite271 (red)? I have built RC Helicopters, nothing shakes more than that. We use loctite as a rule.

Nail polish?

Come on, Man!

Hey I used to be in to Team Associated stuff back and the day. I’ve done a little helicopter flying, that is some hard stuff. Also, yes that rattles a heck of a lot. I use loctite a lot and it seems to work better than any other substance (too brittle is bad too).

I only used that clear "cuticle adhesive resin" on the 5-40 set screw threads. Nothing on the M7 screw or nut. Previously only a dozen shots would have the barrel looser after tightening the nut. I am now confidant this repair will work out well. I will try that Vibra-Tite product soon on the M7 threads only, leave the set screw out for a test. Like I said I have two new bolt assemblies on hand.

I will hit the 10,000 shots fired mark by mid week. The nick name "work horse" for the HW80 is right on. It's my only airgun and it gets worked near everyday.

Vibratite has several different products. Make sure it's the VC-3 formula. The nice thing about this formula is you can disassemble and reassemble multiple times. It's sort of a elastic type material whereas Loctite dries hard and somewhat brittle. Once you break the bond with Loctite you have to clean the fastners and reapply it. That makes Vibratite great for the barrel pivot bolt. You can tighten or loosen the bolt to get the proper tension without worrying about breaking the bond. The Weihrauch company in Germany should have you do commercials for them as a testament to their HW80. :)

Did another 50 shots in less than good conditions to test out this repair. Set my smaller plate at 30 yds. into the winds and was still hitting it good. No nut or set screw movement and the barrel tension remained unchanged. Same as when new with just a little finger pressure to move it. This repair is solid. Not going to do a full tear down on the 80 until I need to. No Vibra-Tite VC-3 on the shelf anywhere near me. Ordered a small $9.00 tube online from Walmart.
