Veteran .25 Shooting Question?!

I have done some shooting with my baby and I love it. But…

Now the crazy thing. I am not a good shot by any means, but I found myself facing something going against physics.

I went last weekend for an hour as the temp was 20F with colder wind. So I threw few pellets down the range out of a bag wile my finger could move.

at 35 yards (0 on the scope) I got that.

at 50 yards still aiming at the bull eye (no compensation) I had that. As you can see I pulled one of the shots. and that is why you have the 1.95" and the .58" groups. I measured the same one with and without the flyer. Oh and the photo of the target is upside down, so it is a drop and not a rise on the group. I stapled the target upside down. The wind was 1-5 mph not 10 as reported on the pic

I think I have to get to know my baby a bit more. but if anyone can chime on what can make me do that. I would gladly take the input.

The only thing that makes sense is that you sighted-in at 35 yards at what you thought was the middle (crosshair) of the reticle but was actually a holdunder hash. Shooting the 25.39 from a .25 Veteran at any feasible out-of-the-box speed wouldn’t produce what you are getting. I'd bet you did this:

Then, when you shot at 50, you actually used the middle (crosshair) of the reticle.

Your second zero must be farther then 50 yards maybe 75 yards? You essentially have two zero's because the pellets trajectory is like an arc. It passes the scopes line of sight once on the way up and again on its way back down. Bingo, two zero's.😉

If he sighted at 35 yards his "two zeroes" would be 35 and 15 yards. This doesn't explain it. This was my first thought as well but once I considered the ballistics it didn't make sense.

Would you please tell the name of the app above. Thank you.

Mine, at 885 fps is zeroed at 22/40 yards (those are the 2 zeroes) and I'll have a drop of .78 inch at 50, and .20 at 35yards, so yes, it's normal for it to start dropping after your second zero.

Hey all,

Thank you for all your input. My main question was: Why are my groups are tighter at 50 than they are at 35?

I went back today and did some more shooting. Today's results are more in the normal behavior. I will have to measure them.

I just don't understand why my 35 yard groups aren't tighter than my 50. I still can't get the reason behind that except a bad shooter. But still, today I was able to shoot a 2x3 target at 100 yards 8 shots out of 10. could it be something with the settings on the scope. Remember I do not change anything on the scope during the shooting except the parallax.

Anymore input? Anyone?

sorry i didnt read this before..... there are several factors.... maybe when you shoot 35y wind was calm, maybe bad pellets (different weight, deformed), maybe you have to clean the barrel, maybe rifle regulates better when yo shoot 50y..... there are many factors that can influence your groups....thats why i love airgunning!!

Also, some days I group better then others, with same pellet, same gun, same conditions, go figure!

I think it’s normal. Do multiple groups at 35 and see how many of them are worst than multiple groups at 50. If it is consistent that you’re grouping better at 50 than at 35 then something weird I don’t know must be happening, but one group at each distance is not representative.

Orion,

That is strange like you said. It isn't a one shot story. over the 12 groups of 5 shots at 35 and 12 at 50 the same tendency was present. Who knows

So I went yesterday and did some shooting.

And the verdict is... first my scope wasn't lined up properly, also I wasn't adjusting my magnification to fit the range. So yesterday's results are, surprising to me. I was able to get close to what Tony from TalonTunes as sent me with the gun at 35 yards (less than a dime), my 50 yards reduced to a 3/4" and hitting 2" target at 100 yards. To me all of that made me smile. Finally, I was able to get in synch with my baby. I know I still have work to do, to get to the full capacity of my Veteran, but it feels like it is now more than ever in reach.

Thank you all for your inputs. I would never thought that having my scope magnification not adjusted for the distance. I was pretty much all the time at 18x for any distance would make such a difference, but it did. Practice and learn as they say
