A scope on the order of 8X32 magnification is what I'm after. Very clear glass, clear at high magnification, repeatable elevation for clicking. Cost of up to about $500.
I have a Hawke Sidewinder 6X24x56 that is incredible. They also make an 8x32x56. It pushes your budget a little at $579 new, but I would imagine with a little bit of effort you can find a used one in good shape.
Athlon FFP 8-34 is my scope of choice for that price point. If you want to shoot out to 100 yards the FFP is the way to go. Just replaced my 10-50 Hawke with it. Going from SFP to FFP has made a huge difference in using all the zoom in a scope for me when shooting from 25-100 yards in the same shooting session. If you shoot the same yardage on the same power you won't see a big difference but if you shoot are various ranges and various powers FFP is a real joy to use. Just my 2cents after owning multiple mid to high dollar scopes over the 30 yrs I been shooting.
